WebProWorld Members,

Since Keeneland is over for the spring that means it is derby time, the Kentucky Derby of course. Along with the horses and betting that also means big hats, celebrities, and $1,000 mint juleps. I haven't been able to go to the derby yet, but I plan on going eventually. If you all ever get the chance you should go too! :)

Our featured post today comes from DVDStar, who says a company he works for is currently redeveloping their site, getbiz, and are toying with the idea of changing the domain name. He wants to know if he should use a 301 redirect. Is this a good idea? Read more details, click here!

As for the remaining three post, the first needs help adding forum pages to a site. The second has a questions about oscommerce SEO friendly URLs. And the third wants to know if Google sitemap indexed pages count.

Domain Name Change And 301 Redirect
Domain Name Change And 301 Redirect

A company I work for is currently working on a major re-branding exercise which will see all of their sites take on a common look and feel.

They are considering completely redeveloping the site, getbiz, and are toying with the idea of changing the domain name. The site does not boast any major search engine positions, but is a PR3 site which is at least something, and also has quite a large number of links.

I've read a fair bit about using some form of redirect, I think a 301 !?, which I've read will transfer over the links and page rank to the new domain.

My question is - is this a good thing, or are there any good / compelling reasons why I shouldn't do this. Likewise are there and good / compelling reasons why it would be a really good idea, as it helps the new domain? Will the new domain automatically start off as a PR3 site if I use a redirect of this nature.

Adding Forum Pages to A Site

While working with a customer using a Hostway hosting plan, I discovered that they offer a forum in their "free interactives" section. I mentioned that it might be fun to add that to a "field reports page", so we tried to set one up.

Long story short, I can't get the forum to load and I've spent hours with Hostway on the phone looking for help, but they haven't been able to get it working either. Now the customer has become convinced that he really wants this forum and I'm looking for a better way to add one to his site.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

osCommerce SEO friendly URLs

A potential client contacted my company about taking over an osCommerce site and possibly doing some SEO work on it. The site has been around for a while and has fairly good rankings in the search engines. They currently get 30K+ visitors from organic search a month.

They are not utilizing the oscommerce contribution for SEO friendly URLs. All their URLs look something like product_info.php?products_id=6560-200.

My fear is that switching on the SEO friendly URLs will ruin their current established rankings in the search engines.

Has anyone had experience with turning on SEO friendly URLs with an already established site that does not have them? What precautions should I take? What are the risks?

Google Sitemap Indexed Pages Count?

Been using an xml sitemap on a new site (6 months) for about 2-3 months now, the site had 55000 pages and 44000 indexed prior to submiting a sitemap. Admitedly there were some pages indexed that I did not want indexed and are now not indexed.

Here is my head scratcher.

Since submiting the site map I noticed a gradual reduction of indexed pages using the site:www.d o m a i n.co.uk search from 44k down to 22k over a 2 month period. This has now bottomed out and is now on the climb so I am not to conserned as I know there were pages indexed that I were not supposed to be.

However the Sitemap statistics in the Google webmaster tools is suggesting I have 42999 pages indexed when infact the site:www.d o m a i n.co.uk search is showing 24,100.??
