WebProWorld Members,

Have you all been checking out our latest WebProNews videos? In our most recent video, Abby Prince interviews Sarah Bird, of SEOmoz, about the uproar that has been created from someone trying to trademark the term "SEO". What do you all think about it? Should Jason Gambert have gotten approval from the Trademark Office? Watch the video for more details!

Our featured post today comes from gr8dane, who is having some email problems. The problem comes when he sends the emails: the HTML entities don't get translated. He wants to know if decoding the values before he uses them in the email, would open him up to the security problems the encoding was meant to avoid? If you can help, click here!

As for the remaining three post, the first wants your thoughts on why there aren't more sites like Craigslist. The second needs help understanding search bots and meta tagging. And the third has a couple questions about backlinks.

(PHP) HTML Entities In Emails
(PHP) HTML Entities In Emails

I'm using values entered in a form to send an email using the mail() function.

When the form is posted, I apply the htmlspecialchars() function to the values. The problem comes when I send the email: The HTML entities don't get translated in the email.

I've considered decoding the values before I use them in the email, but wouldn't that open me up to the security problems the encoding was meant to avoid?

Why Aren't There Any Other Sites Like Craigslist?

I know there are a lot of smaller, niche, city targeted sites that are classified ads, but really CL completely dominates the market and I don't see anything/anyone out there challenging them.

The site probably took an afternoon to code, hasn't changed much since it launched and doesn't market itself at all. We have an abundance of search engines, numerous book sellers, endless news outlets ... why only one classified ad site?

Any thoughts?

Understanding Search Bots/Meta Tagging

In my current search for knowledge I am interested in the meta tags and whilst there is now a school of thought that say they are a waste of time (not convinced of this) do search bots actually obey tags geared to them?

for example
<meta name="robots" content="index,follow">

<meta name="revisit-after" content="10 days">
and/or
<meta name="expires" content="1 day">

My point of view is (and shoot me down) at the end of the day it is a mistake to assume any intelligence from what is a program conducting it's pre installed set of instructions. Lets face it , it may be fast but can only count to one! So why would the robots actually do what is requested of them? I have seen

Backlinks Problem

I've got a question about backlinks. Our site (Intra-Designs) has backlinks from all our clients, plus many many directories, and many other sites, but they're not showing up.

Everyone is talking about how important backlinks are, but how do you get backlinks to show up on Google? Of the 100+ backlinks we've set up with keywords, maybe 8 actually show up.
