Learn more about Web CEO
Bambi Francisco over at MarketWatch is reporting that the funding Topix received from the newspaper companies was less than $5 million.

However, Bambi goes on to say this:

"Separately, the three newspapers bought 75 percent of the company for a market valuation below $100 million, but north of what venture capitalists valued Friendster, according to someone close to the deal. Friendster was a fast-growing social-networking start-up that received a market valuation of $50-plus million in the fall of 2003."

Does that mean the three founders received a $5 million investment and seperately were given another $50 million for the 75% stake?

I doubt it.... but if it is true then the Internet bubble is back!

CSS Spam is Out of Control!

CSS Spam is Out of Control! The extensive abuse of CSS Spam techniques to hide text, keywords and gateway URLs has grown to be a phenomenal problem.

We expect an algorithm update that may rival the "Florida" update in severity.

Recently, in the process of doing several online competitive analyses we have been surprised at the number of Sites using "Black Hat" CSS spamming techniques to gain unfair top listings in the SERPs.

It only stands to reason that GOOGLE is addressing that issue; in it's new found critical mass.

Unscrupulous SEO, marketing, and web promotion companies, and even "in house" webmasters often misguide Site Owners in the use of such techniques. They may not even inform the Site Owner that "Black Hat" techniques are being used that could put their Site, business and livelihood at risk. Read Replies

Value of H1 Tags

I'm doing some revamping, fixing W3c and stuff and at the same time trying to optimize keywords and so on.

Much of our site is still being changed over to using more CSS so I have lots of inline span tags ATM. As I go I'm slowly changing these to CSS. - Whew

I'm also changing many headings to a CSS H1,2,3 etc (I know shoudda started that way, but, I'm a learnatic) These things weren't obvious at the time cos I didn't know I could edit the tag :) and now its a case of fixing.

The guts of my question: does a H1,2,3 etc tag appear of more "value" to a SE than a simple inline span style. ie does a SE "hunt" headings preferably to text. Read Replies

Linking to Yourself

I saw a site recently that was ranking very well in the serps which had all it's keywords linking back to itself (it was probably doing wonders for its allinanchor:keyword results!)

The keywords themselves were disguised so that you couldn't see the anchor text until you ran your mouse over the phrases.

I've done it my site and have hit number 1 for the key words I'm targeting. (yay).

So, of course the question is, has anyone else tested this to see if it works as an SEO technique? Does Google take a dim view of a crazy amount of optimised linking going on within a page back to itself, or does it make no difference? Should I pull my head in and not risk it? Read Replies

Who is Where?

With WPW members literally posting from all over the world, I'm very curious to know what everyone's hometown is like.

I live in one of the most beautiful places in northern Michigan. It's a small town that relies on tourism year-round for snow sports and wealthy summer residents. We are nestled on a bay along Lake Michigan, which provides sailing and boating in summer.

It is very quaint and safe here with lots of friendly year-rounders that call this town "home" - we have a strong sense of community. A larger city is just across the bay for shopping and also provides us with added business opportunities.

I live on the bluff above town and my office is downtown on Main Street - I can walk one block to the beach, marina and city wharf. Much of our business comes from the two towns on the bay but we have been expanding our reach across the northern Michigan region more. Read Replies

If you see a "DMOZ editor" visit in your logs, does this mean you will be added? The visit did not go past my first page and acted like a spider.
