Default I need my website optimised....

Dear Webpro Forum,

I set up a baby & new mum online gift shop in September last year. Initially I started swapping links with other relevant sites from my links page, which is ongoing. I also submitted my site to all search engines and free directories that I could find.

I am now on page 1 of an MSN search for ‘Baby Gift’, however I don’t appear anywhere on the first few pages of a Yahoo or Google search for ‘Baby Gift’ of ‘Baby Present’ which are the search terms most likely to be used for someone who is likely to buy from my site.

I can see that MSN sees 393 links going into my site, Yahoo 104, and Google only 18! (http://www.babybgifts.co.uk)

I have a counter installed on my website which shows me where hits are coming from, and although some do come from Google and Yahoo, they are really specific searches, which do not always generate orders.

I have investigated going some advertising on a relevant website such as the ‘mother & baby’ section of ivillge or mumsnet.com, however the costs are prohibitive for me at the present time.

I would prefer to be in the top organic listings of search engines, as I know that I myself as a consumer would prefer to buy from one of these sites, considering those companies more reliable than those with a paid advertisement.

Could anyone give me advice on optimising my website and how much it would cost? I am London based and would like to learn how to do this myself, so would it make sense to use a London/UK based company. I am guessing that a UK based company would have more knowledge of the UK market, and that is where the bulk of my target consumers are based.

Any advice would be gratefully received.
Baby B.

Default Thanks for your message!

Dear Tala,
thanks for your message and your advice. I havn't worked out how to send you a private message, so hope you can see this.

Could you give me an idea of how much you would charge to optimise my website, and an idea of likely results, and timeframe to achieve these results.

Many thanks!
Baby B

First, welcome to the forum.
The first step would be to optimize your pages for SEO.

Start be changing your title tags to be specific for each page. if you want to be found for baby gifts, then that's what your page title should be not Baby B Gifts. this should also carry over to your content and meta tags, you can't expect to be found for terms if you don't use them on your pages. It will also help if the sites that do link to you have the anchor tag as Baby Gifts

It will drastically increase your traffic if you created individual optimized pages for your product catalog, this will bring in more targeted traffic.

That should get you started on your way
