Look at the XAMPP site

I downloaded and installed all you need in 5 minutes.

Is this a production web server or test?

I only say that because XAMPP "CAN BE" a security flaw, if you don't secure it beyond the default installation.

"Quoted from the XAMPP site:
As mentioned before, XAMPP is not meant for production use but only for developers in a development environment. The way XAMPP is configured is to be open as possible and allowing the developer anything he/she wants. For development environments this is great but in a production environment it could be fatal."

Great for production, or a box behind a good hardware firewall.

Just my Humble Opinion.

It is definitely a test server with the default installation.

And there are much more security concerns than changing the default installation. It is easy to change the default installation. Read the introduction. It is also very important to read down the page of the installation you choose. I choose the windows version, so I had to read down this page.

In addition there are other configuring concerns,

.hataccess (the apache server)
different .ini files.

You should also learn the Admin tools that follow the packet. It is important to learn what is in the xampp folder and in its subfolder. Finally if you want to be an expert, you should visit the right sections of the Apache site.

It takes 5 minutes to download and install the software. Being an expert is a constant race between you and potential hackers. Don't believe that all hosters out there are experts on security.

No truer word was spoken. The webhosting industry is very easy to get into. Get a reseller deal with a major host, a template monster web design, modernbill to handle signups and you are up and running for less that $300. At this stage I would say less than 60% of shared hosting companies actually have competent admins (or are more that one man operations).

I've been a linux admin for over 10 years, and a 20 year programmer to boot but I would never start a hosting company yet I know the industry inside out. Why, I am one man, I would never have hundreds of clients depending totally on me. Yet everyday I see new startup hosting companies asking questions on webhostingtalk.com how do I chmod files? it beggars belief at times.

Regarding the xammp stuff, even a default linux distro with apache, php, perl, mysql etc is by default insecure. They take a fair bit of tweaking/hardening. To run them on a windows production server is nuts in my opinion.
