Graphic designer needed.

I am going to steal some of the language from an ad that I just saw looking for another position. Here is my ad.........

Looking to Build a Graphic Portfolio? We can help!!! While we are looking for someone that is artistically talented, we really want them to be creative.....we want graphic product that people look at and say WOW!!!!! We know how to market and we know conceptually a direction that we want to go, but what it should look like and how to build a campaign around it.....that's where you come in.

An example.....take a look at www.newpig.com whether you like it or not, it catches someones attention and you remember it. We want someone who can create that kind of idea. Lots of people can draw, but creative concept....that is something hard to find

We are looking for a graphic designer out there who is looking to build a portfolio and get their name out in the marketplace.

We have a number of website projects in the pipeline for which we need a wide range of graphic work.

In exchange you will receive strong testimonials / references,have a link on our various websites which deal with office supplies and industrial supplies and make some money. By the end of 2004, we will have over 50,000 products

I am willing to pay some money because you need food, shelter and some clothes. But, I want someone that shares the same desire to build a business that we do. That shares the same passion for business that we do. I want the type of work that requires someone to spend some extra time to do, because they will use this work to build a great graphics business. This is a great way to build a portfolio, obtain references and generate referrals.

Very true, but regarding newpig.com it is about the business concept itself (company name) that brings people's attention. It has very little to do with graphic design.
The interesting thing about it is "pigs doing the cleaning business" which brings some sympathy.

Don't take this personaly, but many people are alergic on this type of ad.
The company who deals with 50,000 products in office & industrial supplies doesn't do some charity work and can't expect enthusiasm for the sake of "doing nice business" only.
You either make partners (e.g. company shares) who will passionately bear all the risks and fruits or you pay fairly for the services needed.
Needless to say, in all businesses, more you invest more rewarding it is. The quality has always its price.
So if you need real quality I can refer you to the right person. Just send me a PM. ;-)

Being a graphic designer with plenty of experience.. I can tell you that ANY designers with extensive experience and a great portfolio will have well PAYING clients barking down there door= Because of the excellent work they do. Simply, they will not be intersted in your offer because real designers deserve real pay.

I think you need to re-adjust the way you look at design. Its a service. Designers work hard to get you the results you need.. we are a business, You need us so that yours can survive and grow (not vice versa).

I am not trying to be negative, but rather have people understand that graphic designer should be respected by others. We have a skill (at least the good ones do) and we dont need to work for free or nearly nothing to prove it. - Thats what portfolios are for.

It is very tiring to hear of yet another person looking for free work.

If you want quality work done you have to pay for it.

These kiddies going around pretending to know something is devastating the internet design business.

Most small to medium sized business come to their own conclusions that design work should cost next to nothing and most try and hire some student for minimum wage.

I charge $35US per hour.

Now lets do some simple math. An amature designer hired at $8 per hour in 4 hours can accomplish the same as a professional designer could in an hour.

Hmm. Thats $32 for 4 hours and one project. Half a day wasted.
Now you hire a professional. Call them at 8:30 when you get to the office they reach back to you by 9:30 with a finished product and it only cost $35

The economic impact doesn't have to be explained as if it is going to make a difference in your business you would have already figured it out for yourself.

I think I'm going to start a blog about cheap, ignorant business owners. Not enough room to rant in here!

And for odomike. That's a template - get a life go bak to school or start working construction.

I agree fully.

if you start up that blog, let me know..
I'll make sure all my real designer friends know about it and we can all laugh and cry about these uneducated "designers".

BTW: one other point:
Having a bad design can actually ruin your business.. decrease sales, give the wrong impression and ultimately ruin your companies reputation. Why would you put at stake all that you have worked for... in order to through it all away.

How do you think companies like Coke, the gap etc got where they are? Its not from hiring designers who work for 8$ an hour.. I can tell you that.
