I realize the best answer to this question is probably "do both"

But let's assume you have only one hour this afternoon to work on your site - which task would you more likely take on - build more pages or build more links?

I would prefer more pages with related content.

Sorry Keyon, but the correct answer is typically both. But that also depends on how developed your site is. I would focus on content first, then traffic. Traffic isn't very useful if your content is bad or incomplete.

I have to say both, good content that isn't found isn't that effective and you are going to have a tough time building links without good content. Why not alternate between the two.

I tend to agree that you do need to do both- add content as well as add links. The question I have is this:
You add content- new product pages as an example. Now should you add links to those new pages or to your home page or other product pages?

Ditto on BOTH. Think from the page angle, though. The links will fall in as the pages are developed and relevant links posted outward. As mentioned above, they are like bait to quality inbounds.

I build more pages. I see building pages as something more productive than building backlinks.

I'm also in the more content area. It's obvious that your site is indexed already as you're asking "more pages or more links" so your new content will be found by Google through internal linking, and will add more weight to your existing pages and ranking. At the end of the day, links are mainly there for search engines and content is there for visitors, and you should build websites for visitors rather than search engines in my opinion.

It really depends on what stage of development your site is. If you haven't completed certain sections or really don't have a lot of content yet, then content, content, content.

If you have a good working base and everything is completed and optimized, work on links for a while and then create more content. Alternate days, or weeks.

I build more pages. I see building pages as something more productive than building backlinks.

Since content is everything, so i would like to have more pages with relevant and good content.

First more pages and then will prefer to get more backlinks for those pages. If you dont have more content then whats the use of backlinks?? they cant give good results for long run..

blogs are a perfect example: The ones that add new content regularly get the most attention and elevate themselves in the link realm.

If you have a blog based on WordPress or similar spend your hour creating new "tags". Then be certain that each post has a minimum of 5 or 6 of these tags.

Google treats these as new pages, increasing you page count and therefore your authority. Also, if you are clever enough to make tags that are new phrases that are highly searched you will create more traffic through the tags ranking in new keyword niches.

Both are important. I prefer to do more pages with quality , relevant and keyword content. And also when it comes to links i always prefer to build quality links with most relevant niche. Dont focus just on building links to your site , better focus on building quality and authoritative links .

Building more pages with quality content and bacllinks will create higher possibility for multiple keywords rankings.

If I could only do one, I would create more pages, and link them to each other internally. Search engines will find your pages easily when they come to your already indexed sites, and add your content to their search engine....

I'd also use a social bookmark (at the very least) and get a couple of links from sites that are visited regularly....

But in a one or the other only scenario, I'd own more of the Internet, and make the content killer so that other would want to do the linking for me.

I don't think you can seperate them, I see them as one task. build a new content page then build some one way inbound links to it to get it ranking quickly.

it is ok , the best answer to this question is "do both",but for all kind of website ,the important is different. for shopping website,build more links is more important.add product is easy.

Either way is right ,it's not the quantity but quality.You doesn't need to create so many pages ,go build some related links but one essential element is you link must be relevant and your content is decent .

For me I would put useful unique content, because even without a high PageRank, my articles can have the chance to rank well in SERP for well written, unique and useful articles.

i think of it as a constant cycle... build content, build content, get links ... rinse and repeat.

Both are important. Build more pages with quality, unique and keyword rich content to get more quality backlinks.

First of all - obvioulsy I know that both activities are part of the process. However, the less time someone has to work on websites, the more important to identify which activities yeild the most return. I posted the question to collect some opinions from readers about which activity they think ultimately provides the greater payoff. Then I would use those opinions to perhaps help me better allocate and manage my time.

As you can see in the thread - we do have some differing opinions on this topic, although most are leaning toward the more-content answer.

I suppose I expected the more-content answer to win overall - since a lot posters like to chime in with the popular "forget-google-and-design-for-your-visitors" rhetoric. However, I was a little surprised just how much of that showed up here. I think it's fine to build a site with the visitor in mind, but I think it's somewhat of a simplistic answer to say "good content" is the best way to attract links. It's a little more involved than that.

Obviously the correct answer is both. You can't rank well for keywords that are the slightest bit competitive without doing both...

Concentrating JUST on creating content and having those new pages all rank on page 5, 10, 20 of the SERPs does you absolutely not good. If you're not on page 1 (possibly 2) then you are going to get zero traffic.

However, concentrating on link building can make your existing URLs rank better, but if you don't have the content there that people expect once they click on the link in the SERPs, they are just going to bounce back.

If I had 20 hours per week to work on a site, I would never spend all 20 hrs generating content... or all 20 hours generating backlinks. I would be much better off splitting the 20 hrs over both tasks.

Depends. If you have enough time you can build more pages otherwise make more links.
