Really good advice, im working through all of the tips above for a client at the moment, really could do with organising this lot into an excel list or something for the future

I have posted blog comments at blog posts that are more than 6 months old but you say not to do so. Is there a google prohibition on that or just not good form. Most of the time I don't bother to try to post a comment unless there is recent activity - within the last 2-4 weeks. Other wise the comment is discarded.
I guess my question is should I not post on a blog post over 6 months old and why?

There isnt a google prohibition (that i know of at least) and i dont see any reason for not posting in blogs that old except that your link may not be there very long.

Great informations you have there.. If your doing article submission, make sure not to submit it with the same article directory 'coz it can create duplicate content.. In doing blogs, write interesting topics and update it regularly.. In doing link exchange, make sure to submit your URL to relevant sites..

Content that is worthy of linking to will generate tons of links, effortlessly too. I started a site in December and Yahoo recognized it as authority site and gave me over 500 links.

It does not have anything to do with relevency. You are simply not seeing all the links the #1 listing actually has. Either they were not yet indexed due to it being a fairly new website, or they are using tactics such as 301's from an older linked site. And you are correct, if you do not know this already, you know very little about SEO.

One of the possible reason is the quality of the links. Number of the links sometime doesn't mean much. Google credits the link from high authority website.

Do follow lists that are posted are useless for most of the people.No offense to anyone its just that links to your website or blog should be from websites and blogs that are relevant to your niche not your some random high rank website or blog
