Default will several 301s hurt rankings?

I know that redirects have been covered here before. My question is: can I redirect several alternate domains to our main domain with out getting hit with a duplicate content penalty?

We own TLDs for 3 alternate spellings of our .com. Can I redirect the alternate spelling TLDs to the main domain with a 301 without getting a duplicate content penalty?

Also, I plan to put a robots.txtz: User-agent: * Disallow: / in each of the alternate domains.

Thanks you guys! Thanks for the podcasts.. It's like having coffee with SEO experts!

Sure that is not an issue. 301 redirects happen server side so the content is never looked at.

I have a similar question but slightly different. If we do a 301 redirect of multiple domains to one, does that mean that we cannot d search engine optimisation for the domains being forwarded? As the search engines will never look at the content will it even show the domain name on searches? What happens to the back links for the domain? will they be counted as links to the domain to which it is being 301 redirected.

Sometimes the credit is moved over to the domain sometimes not. You really never know until you make the move.
