Default better to blog on-site or off-site?

If I want to built the ranking for a site - say companyx.com with a blog, is it better to simply add a blog to the site i.e companyx.com/blog? Or is it a better idea to create a new blog site... say industryzBlog.com and have links on that site that point to companyx.com?

Thanks and thanks very much for the podcast!! I've learned a lot from you!

Add it to the existing site.

If you add it to the main site it will make the site bigger and increase the possibility of being found for more search terms.

Also you do not have to expect the visitor to then click a link to get to where you want to sell.

Adding it to your original site has a number of advantages:

- Customer does not have to manuver between to sites

- It makes your main site bigger

- It makes your main site more likely to be found in search engines

- It makes it easier for visitors to your main site to find your blog

Here are the advantages for having your blog of site:

- You can get a backlink from your blog (But do not put too many!)

- You would have two domain names for customers to find.

- If you had great content on both your blog and site, the blog and site could end up being the first two results in search engines.

Overall, I think the decision depends on the amount of content you have ready and the time you have to make more content.

Very good arguments for either option. Usually, people tend to create multiple blogs to have a unique URL, relevant content pointing to corresponding pages of your site. You will have different sites pointing to your site. I am talking about off site blogging.

I think this is called Google Bombing, and it must be avoided.

Integrating blog in existing site is much better than to start a separate blog site. Your visitor will be always there with you.
You will have some more good content regarding your product or services.
Crawl rate of your website will be improved as your blog will be updated more frequently, and hence increasing the chance of googlebot visit more regular.

I agree. But also it depends. You can make niche specific blogs for different target groups, to diversify and present your product better. I can reason it that way.

We've tried both strategies and I have to say that it is really hard to see a difference between the two.

Yes, on-site blogs will build content on your site, but the links from the blog do fairly little. On the other hand, an off-site blog can gain it's own audience, build authority and then pass value back to the main site, but there is an extra click in the sales process.

Add it to the site I think. Less confusing that way.

It is better if you add blog like this companyx.com/blog to your site because it is the possible way of increasing traffic to your site.

Add it to the main site, just be sure the blog has good content, is relevant and contains keywords - of course.

The updated content, links, possibility of getting more traffic and it being directly affiliated with your site should help things along if the blog is run properly. But, like it has been stated it depends on how often you can create that new content for the blog and how good the copy is. If its bad, then I would guess you don't want that to effect(affect?) your main site, if its good...then you certainly do! Also people might be more inclined to have a look around your site if they go to the blog first but see the other sections included there and close by.
