SEO, where to start?
Hello WebProWorld,
For a few weeks now I've been reading about SEO on websites and forums like this one.
I've taken interest in the profession and wish to learn more via other means.
I've started this thread to ask for tips. Where and how can a newbie start learning SEO?
Quote:
On a side note:
I searched Amazon with the query 'search engine optimization' which yielded lots of results.
Since I'm a student I can't afford buying many books, so I need to make sure I'm buying quality.
What books, if any, would you recommend a newbie (not a dummy)?
|
Thanks in advance,
MJW.

Re: SEO, where to start?
You need to start from reading the guidelines of major search engines i.e. GOOGLE, YAHOO & MSN...
Then try to read out some basics of SEO tips on forums and keep updates yourself. Then you need to do keyword research and select some key-phrases of low competition so that you can test yourself. And try to analyze what you have done step by step if you make mistake at the initial step then try to correct that step on next one...

Thank you for the feedback,
Reading the guidelines set by major search engines, good point! Silly that this hadn't occurred to me before.
I'll keep your advise on testing with low competition key-phrases in mind.

Welcome MJW...
I told you the guidelines of search engines because most the SEO guyz forget to read the guidelines of search engines and then start spamming....... so before starting any profession you need to know all pros and cons of that profession.

Before you ever take on a client you need to build your own website and have success SEOing it. Pick out a niche and build a website. Get it ranking, this will teach you a lot.

Re: SEO, where to start?
Being as Newbie, first you need to understand SEO Slung terms, because when you are going through any book, article or tutorials you won't get any thing, may be u will confuse in such terms and will not get proper knowledge.
My suggestion is prepare the list of SEO Slung terms than go....
Go through each and every forums.
With different different user names,
Ask them same questions for you have doubt.
Get the collections of replies. and see which reply you got maximum, and than you can do research on the same,
And implement to your work also...
Best of luck,

Its not possible to go through each and every forum, just need to go through the desired topic i.e. seo or related terms only on some popular webmaster forums such as webproworld, digitalpoint, seochat etc.

I'm thinking of helping out a friend who is starting his own plumbing business.
He has no knowledge of websites or SEO and will, if I choose to help him, give me complete freedom.
The site should be optimized for potential clients in his area, Wiltshire UK, which I think will be a good challenge.
Since the website won't be his main source of clients, this might be a good place to start practicing SEO.
Thanks for all the tips, keep 'em coming!
MJW.

1st of all, i just made little mistake over here i need to write each and every good forum, this will not make any confusion.
Second thing, i am in the same business since last 3 years... i know guidelines and i always respect it.
Why i suggest to use diff. name not in the same forum, my intension was to tell in each forum u should use different names,
so when you are going to make same post in dp, and want to post same post over here, no one identify you,
otherwise you may get banned because of cross forum posting.
Hope you understand....

Re: SEO, where to start?
Being technically correct is important as far as how your site is programmed and coded, some of the smartest "SEO's" are actually programmers, so check World Wide Web Consortium for proper instruction on all facets of proper development and tools to validate your code.

I agree with you on the importance of writing clean code. I validated every page I code, including CSS files.
Why do you think some of the smartest "SEO's" are programmers?
There are surely more ways to be a smart SEO without being a good programmer, like being a clever copywriter?
Or even better, a mixture of both. I hear what your saying tho, good programming is key.

Re: SEO, where to start?
Well, one reason is that you need coders to set up PHP duplicate content removal and proper URL structures to avoid penalties, so the best SEO's are actually coders.
