Default Create a sub page or a new domain?

I am currently working with an eCommerce site that has created a new product for their industry. The new product is related, however; it is much more different than what is out on the market now. My question is, is it better to create a sub page or a category page under the main domain or just create a brand new domain with the name of the product?

If the company is already well know (branded) I'd put it on the same domain. But iof the new product is so revolutionary that it's destined to become a household name, go for a domain with that product's name in it. If the company will be the only place you can buy this new product, no reason why you couldn't do both until you see how well it takes off ...

I would do both with unique content on each

A new domain will take longer to rank but starting sooner than later will help you in the long run

Adding a subpage will increase the chances of that page/product getting ranked and potentially making money sooner than later

I think I would go with keep the new product on the same site for the simple reason that new domains do take some time sometimes to get well ranked and/or trusted...

On your current site you could make a new page or new section with sub-pages as well, that relate to the product...and also link to the new product page from several 'predominant' pages on your site including your home page.

For one of my sites, launched a new section offering reviews (of my competitors services) and linked to it from a few places on my site, I'm ranked #1 for my keywords and ranked #1 for the reviews searches now too...

Do both - and let the search engines decide which they think is most relevant.

I've been shocked at how much weight G places on keywords in new domain names. It doesn't work all the time - because it depends on the competition you're up against for those particular keywords. But if youi're lucky enough to hit an untapped hole in the marketplace - wow - your new, keyword-rich domain will leave your old site in the dust.

Yes. Do both. Won't hurt and can only help. You're going to need to register the product's name as a domain name for your own protection anyway. Might as well put it to use. Put a great keyword rich link from your home page to the new one. That will really help get it moving in the SERP's right away. If you have any other web properties put links on those as well. 2-3 decent PR (3+) inbound links will really make a huge difference. I launch all new websites like that and they tend to behave as if they'd been around for years right out of the gate.

Definitely register the new trade name with USPTO. Register the exact domainname.com. You will quickly rank high for the new trade name because no one else is using it. Once you are at the top, popularize the term with branded traditional advertising - tv, radio, newspaper. You will see copy cat site pop up around you, but they will never be able to topple your ranking as you sue them away from exisitence from using your trademark.

Does Google tap into the USPTO TESS to see who the owner of a trade term is to help decide who is more relevant? Can a trade group rally behind USPTO to provide a digital key string to domain owners showing certification of trademark ownership which would help the search engines trust the domain more?

Do you mean a sub-domain?

If so you have to log into your hosting account and from there you should see a button that will give you the ability to create a sub-domain. But you may not see a button to create sub-domains if your hosting provider hasn't allowed you to create them.

If that's the case you have to contact your hosting provider telling them you would like to create the sub-domain.

So go log into your hosting account and see if it's there...

I will create a sub-page with using product name as keyword and put good content also.
I will also create a blog for that product and promote it also.

I would also do both and interlink the sub domain to the domain. Generally I think this is a good practice. The brand name is not what I would consider to be the most relevant keyword however I would look for the best keywords describing that niche and use that to name the domain and subdomain. If the brand is really worth something then take the brand for domain too. It surely cannot be that the costs of the domain are the problem. Its true that new domains take longer but in a years time those links from the new domains start to have value too and then you have won on both the traffic and interlinking. Whats more if you keep the new keyword domain to be less specific and wider to the niche you could even build in your own recommendations and get a jump on the reputation of your products too.

Hi Morestar,
Thanks for your quick reply! My domain name host is godaddy and although I don't find a button to create a sub domain, I did find directions to create one.
What I want to do is create another page for my website and add that page to my tabs menu. I'm assuming creating a sub domain is what I need to do this?
I've a complete newbie!

Do both? Plus a blog?

So, in building both volume and relevance of inbound links, where are you going to focus your efforts?

A new domain will cost you $10 a year...building a new page within an existing domain should be free or cheap.

Sub-domain can take time in terms of SEO as sub-domains are consider as a site, so it's better go with an another folder in the site (domainname.com/new-folder.htm).

i think you should use it in a smart way.. a sub-domain might help in
a store - example: ladies-mywebsite-com / mens-mywebsite-com
(the - is there cuz' i cant post domains yet)

but if you got a wide selection of brands its safer, easier to maintain and fast to open
a page=category
