Default Editing a .master file?

I am trying to edit a file via ftp access (windows) called mainpage.master, but my computer is not allowing me to do this.

Any suggestions?

That sounds like an asp.net file. You can open it with Notepad.exe. I'm just not sure if you can do that via ftp though; you might need to copy it to your computer and upload it after editing it.

ftp software is a file transfer protocol.. It generally does not support editing.. What you can do is download the file to your computer, edit it there in notepad etc., and then upload it back to the server.. Just be sure to make a backup version of the file before you edit it just in case you break something..

I have downloaded the files to my computer, but when I click on the .aster file, it won't open. Do I need a program to open this file?

I am a firm believer that if you can not open a file without help you really should not be trying to edit it.. It never goes well..

That said, start notepad, click File -> Open and change the Files of type: at the bottom to All Files.. Find your file and open it..

But, I stand by my previous comment.. I don't see this ending well at all.. If not this time, then the next time you start messing about in there..

Masterpages are really great. VisualStudio can create/edit those as can Expression Web.

I'm more familar wtih Expression Web. If you open in that program, you'll be able to edit it like you would any web page - in code or in design view.

In a master page there are editable areas called content areas

Code:
<asp:ContentPlaceHolder runat="Server" id="Content1">
    <div>Put your content here</div>
</asp:ContentPlaceHolder>
When editing a masterpage, be careful about editing the content place holders. If you change an ID or elminate a ContentPlaceHolder, you'll have problems as the other pages are generated from the masterpage.
