Default Quick ways to check ranking

Hey guys,

Over the years I seem to have ended up looking after more and more sites. Monitoring where each of those is for all it's different keywords is frankly unmanageable by hand.

Does anyone know of a good software package that can check my SERPs for me? Ideally one that can do it for many sites and with some analytics in there so I can see, as the weeks go by, what direction overall my sites are headed in the SERPs.

Kind regards,

Dani x

Thanks Watto. That's not going to give much coverage of Bing and Yahoo though is it?

That sounds more like what I'm looking for, thanks for sharing it Martine. I'm looking to find out what's the "best of breed" in this type of thing now.

Is this a pay for service at any point?

First if you are checking rankings weekly then you need to join a local support group to kick that habit.

Rankings will not vary much in a week where one should need to check them, additionally if the businesses are soundly built, it should be less of an imperative.

You can use WebCeo Pro which is an excellent piece of SEO software.

Personally I check rankings once a month and the above software allows multiple site ranking reports to be run at the same time.

Good luck with your recovery ;->

Rank Checker for FF does a great job on this matter.
Also you can tweak Google Analytics to show this information, use this query on Google to find the "how to": "check keyword ranking in google analytics"
(I can't post URLs here yet ;( ).

Danielle,

I'm not sure if I'm happy I read this post or not.

Because, now it has prompted me to build a rank checker for myself. I know I could utilize other people's systems, but I'm a programmer and this is right up my alley. And the basic functionality isn't that complicated.

There are quite a few desktop tools out there that do this. Just make sure that you use one that will allow for human emulation - so that it does not spam the search engines while checking.
As long as you limit the number of connections and keywords you are searching for. Just let it run and give it time to run slowly. We check our clients accounts once a month unless specifically requested to do otherwise.
What we havent found is a good tool to share amongst our staff.
Does anyone know of a good tool to use for an agency setting? One that is not restricted to a single machine or user?

Of the ones ive tried rankchecker comes first, but it is by no means totally accurate, it will give you a good idea of where you are placing but the major terms are always worth checking manually.

Hehe, that's funny! I'm not that bad and yet there are periods where I'm doing lots of work on the site and want to take more frequent checks than normal. Hell, yeah, sometimes I get the shakes if I don't see those SERPs!!! (just kidding)

Dude, sounds like you got both the poison and the remedy! Maybe you can be the start of Open Source SEO and become a living legend to SMEs everywhere

To Everyone

Thanks so much for your your posts, I'm really happy to get inundated with suggestions as then you get both the product names and a bit of a poll as to what people have found most valuable to their SEO activity. What I'm picking up so far is something like this in terms of popularity:

1 - Rank Checker for FF from SEOBook
2 - WebCEO
3 - KPMRS (the new kid on the block!)
4 - Rank Tracker from Link Assistant
5 - Google Analytics tweaked
6 - Program your own

Thanks Villageloop also for pointing out that there is a danger of spamming search engines with excessive requests, I recall that from before. Is this an issue anyone in an agency setting has run into?

BTW, Great tool posted here, I have never even heard of most of them, Bookmarked.

Regarding checking rankings weekly, I actually check daily when I'm working a site heavily - If you get a decent link from another site this will be reflected in your rankings within 24-48 hours usually.

EDIT: I'm talking about Google here - and I'm talking a decent link from a decent site that gets indexed regularly. A site that gets indexed monthly by Google and has no authority will do little for your rankings and nothing fast.

You will find lots of web tool over the internet but there result will not be same as you will check to go to direct on Google or MSN or yahoo. So i will suggest you not to go any free tool or paid tool, it will be totally time and money consuming for you.

Ummm when you check Google are yopu logged in by any chance or on a static IP? That will affect ranking. I have never seen where the RankChecker was not dead on. Also it can be that when you check manually you gat a different data center

Google Analytics for the detailed data and for rank or positioning stats amongst a myriad of SE's try AdWeb. The thing I like about AdWeb is that you aren't coerced into paying monthly updates fees after purchasing the software unlike many others on the web. It has a respectable amount of features and you can update the AdWeb s/w when new versions are availabe - if and when you want the updates.

So you're saying what? Don't give clients what they ask for... pull results out of thin air... just wondering here because you left only going to the SE's and manually checking... which takes hours when you are doing 3 engines and 4 or 500 keywords... her time is worth nothing? often what seems free is more than what you would pay for something to do the same job without you spending your time... no one in NA works for a bowl of rice and fish... therefore to compete with those that will work for rice and fish.... we automate.

SEO Elite is great. You can have it check for many keywords and it is easy to pull it into a spreadsheet to make a nice looking report. Manually checking numerous keywords for clients would be way to time consuming.

Edited to note that SEO Elite does check for more than just the home page too.

There's another free FireFox add-on that nobody has mentioned, that will give quick mouseover results for any page (real-time, not historic), and that's QuirkSearch. It sits on your status bar, and gives results on PageRank, Alexa, Compete and mozRank. It's also got a drop-down menu for WhoIS, sitemaps, and several other handy tools. Additionally, it will show you the indexed pages for Google, Yahoo and MS Live.
Surely not the most comprehensive tool around, but still, a great quick-check for a lot of aspects.

If you wants accurate result that where you are performing on SERPs then you have to check manually to go on Google, Yahoo, and MSN. If actual position doesn't matter for that project then use any tool.

I have to say that Rank Checker for Firefox has always been 100% accurate - The only discrepancy that can occur is if the Rank Checker is querying a different data center from the one your browser is querying.

But as long as you understand how this works, and know how to tweak the preferences then it is actually a feature! Because it then allows you to check other data centers you want to check, which you cannot from your web browser.

For example: I am based in New Zealand - and Google will always default to google NZ search - but for many of the sites I work on I am optimizing for the USA and European regions. I want to check these data centers, not my own.
