Website ranking in Google

Hi Everybody,

After gaining soo much of information regarding SE's from webpronews newsletter, finally became a member of this forum.

Currently my interest lies in optimizing and promoting my Website in SE's esp. Google.
I hope i'll get useful comments in this regard.

To start with i'd like to tell that my site though got listed in most of the SE's but i'm not able to take its ranking from Google and other SE's as currently it is ranked very far.

Can anyone help me in this?

I would never use my website address in my title.

You need to get as many links to your site as you can get with your key words in those links.

I agree with u.. I tried having keywords in the links (while going for Reciprocal linking) too... but it hasn't yielded any results still!!!

Wht else can i do in this regard? pls suggest.

Have you done all of the usual stuff?
ie:
- put some keywords in your image alt tags
- links to other pages on your site with some of your keywords
- incorporate the important keywords near the top of your page/header - and footer
- put them in the title (this seems key to google)
Then of course the keywords and description meta tags.. description seems that it can play a fairly significant role still.

I am no expert, but somehow our site (even before we showed a google PR) was doing well (relatively) in the major search engines.

We are still at the top on yahoo for various searches. Granted - nothing too exciting as far as keywords but at least we are placing on the first page for quit a few.
We are #1 on yahoo for one search and no longer have the keyword in the title at all - although it is in our description..

Don't know if any of that helped at all, since you can read the above info all over the place.

Hi luck,

Well, as I mentioned I am no expert. And if you compare our site to yours - yours looks very professional to me and ours looks quit cluttered.. We are still working on making it more pleasing - still a new site and light on the UI skills.

Maybe there's a middle ground where you don't have to give up much quality and still get the keywords in there a little more. I did notice that there weren't many keywords in your alt tags and they weren't consistent, which I find very pleasing from a user perspective.. but wonder if it might not help to hone in on a few specific words/phrases a little more.

We don't get much business from the engines although we rank surprisingly well considering how long we've been online and with few link backs...
If I had a choice, I'd go with the quality and professional looking site - something we are still working on here. Both would be nice though! :-)

Hi Tom,

Thanks for ur suggestion regd the use of ALT tags in the images of my site. I'll work on tht!

I've looked thru ur site. It is really good and SE friendly with lots of text and mainly updated NEWS section. These are the major reasons for ur site coming on top in SE's.

And its known that Google gives pref. to text links and if there are any changes in the website like the NEWS section (as in ur site) then it crawls again.

It is always nice to have a good looking site to attract customers, but wht is most essential is that the site shud be simple and must be user-friendly to the customer. so Basically its usability that matters the MOST. And to get customers from SE's etc, as we all know, it has to be search engine friendly.

Becoz more often the site design is not friendly with the SE crawlers. These are couple of things which i believe will always help people while going for a site design.

Any other views???

The news links were just added last week, so that wasn't what it was specifically.
It was all of the other text on there, I'm sure..
