I know that you can have more than one site map on your site. If that is the question?
How adding a sitemap will benefit you is another question. I would stay with recommendations from google's webmaster tools. Unless you have already done everything they recommend and are looking for additional ways to optimize and market.

I use both. They are differences between them so I think both have different traffic. (I don’t check my stats much).
