I am wondering if a secure certificate or the way its applied to a website can cause problems with search engines indexing a website.
Has anyone found any problems with getting an ecomm site listed in the search engines that were linked to the secure certificate? Is there some way to test the SSL on a website to see if the set up properly. Thanks |

I have marketed many ecommerce sites, which tend to do better than static sites that I market. Why? I think it has to do with pure size and content. I have never found the digital cert. to effect this. Everything I know about ecommerce code tells seo's they will have trouble with many of the characters associated in the page name, etc., but again I haven't experienced this. Maybe I've just been lucky?? Anyone...

Yes, I had a problem with one of my websites that has an SSL certificate. We were ranking miserably low despite our efforts to optimize the site. It turned out that we were creating duplicate content with the certificate, that is, all our pages appeared in both http and https. We fixed it by putting 2 htaccess files, one inside and one outside the folder that contains the secure content. Perhaps it's not the best thing to do, but it worked. We finally got indexed by G. Look for a post that says something like "canonicalization issues" and you'll find several ways to fix the issue, among them the code I used which is good for GoDaddy hosting and their SSL.
