Many webmasters (lower case "w" is intentional) seem to think that if one instance of their keyphrase is good, then 500 instances must be better. That was true to some extent several years ago, but not anymore.

Now that the more advanced search engines employ latent semantic indexing, there's simply no benefit to spamming the SE's because the SE's are applying filters to overoptmized sites

In relation to keyword density, this is by far the most intelligent article I've found.

How Search Really Works: The Keyword Density Myth | Search Engine People Blog

Realistically, as long as you don't overdo it, you won't be seen as spamming. Do your level best to write content that sounds natural when read aloud and you'll be fine. Rule of thumb? try to keep your keyword density between 2 and 5% and you should be okay.

Just to make this once more clear and for good, penalties for high keywords exists. But that is one of several values that are involved. One of the penalties is rankings drop or the other is ban. Depends. I created a page for myself and my team (for internal view), which you might would like to have a look at for further help:

Keyword Stuffing - SEO Workers

We hope that our new (updated) seo analysis tool will be ready on the 15th of October, which we will provide a module calculating and showing the above values for pages being tested.

There's no such set keyword density you can shoot for to help with SEO. Just write naturally (visitor friendly).

I have heard that keyword density is not as important now as it used to be. However form my personal experience I can say that keyword density does play a role in rank on search engines. After including more text on my website which was rich in my preferred keywords I have actually seen an increase in my websites ranking for the particular keyword. Of course spamming is not good. I am in no way encouraging you to fill keywords even wher it is not appropriate. However it is improtant to ensure that the main keyword for the page exists a few times atleast. I think up to 4 or 5% is OK. Beyond that it may be too much. In addition to keyword density I think that the main keyword for your site should also be presnet on other pages as well. Having a siite with many articles related to each other in some way will often add weight for the keywords and ranking on search results for that keywords.
Using black hat techniques like suffing the keywords where they do not belong is not recommended as it will most certainly get your website blacklisted.

Matt Cutt's recently stated that your keywords only need to appear 2 or three times per page. I would start to pay attention to where the words appear on the page, this is called LSO. or Latent semantic Optimization.

Keyword density is 3-4% . If your keyword density is high Google will suspect you as keyword stuffing. If your keyword density is low, you will not get better rank.

Proper keyword density also depends on the competition for the expressions(s). Needless to say the less competition the easier to get high rankings...

After doing research i have found that Keyword density is a combination of the number of times a keyword or a keyword phrase, in proportion with other words, appears on a Web page. The more times the keyword appears in relation to the total number of on page words, the greater the overall keyword density. The more times that other words appear, the lower the proportion of keywords, resulting in a lighter keyword density and there many tools available on the Internet for checking keywords density.

Just to make something clear here, since I am reading the thread again and again, and can't see a point.
Keyword density alone is not the issue. Here is some info I recommend you all to read here: Avoiding Keyword Stuffing Ban
