After redisigning a site that was 250+ for most keywords, it took about 20 days before we started to see any improvement. Now, 6 weeks after re-launch the site is first page for most product names and their manufacturer's on the site... and there's about 2700+ products.

Why? I cannot answer that without going completely numinous. I think SEO is akin to Vodou, and I make sure to provide an offering of Energy Drink and Smokes to Papa Legba.

In Haiti, he is the great elocution, the voice of God, as it were. Legba facilitates communication, speech and understanding. In Yoruba, Ellegua is mostly associated with Papa Legba since both share the role of being the god of the crossroads, yet Legba also shares similarities to Orunmila, the orisha of prophesy who taught mankind how to use the mighty oracle Ifá.
Makes sense that he can help with web-portals and communications...

you should start with keyword Research.

after that get the Unique and quality content.

work hard on on page optimization after that you can start off page optimization. Search engines are changing algorithms for better quality search.

so we need to hard work in content + on page + off page optimization.

and seo is on going process so you'll need to maintain ranking in google.

regards time period so it depends on your keywords and traffic.

Good luck
Eric

Just a side note - that's not really anything you're going to be able to apply to your own website(s). Two websites will be very different both SEO-wise and in content. In addition, you may be looking to rank your site for the term 'music', where someone else is aiming for 'small blue widgets with bells on'.

Every website and every keyword is different. Trying to rank for John's bar and grill is a lot easer than trying to rank for computers.

You really need to start thinking if your SEO as soon as you start thinking about building a site. When you do your niche and keyword research, SEO must be on your mind
When you are planning your sites layout, think SEO.
SEO is not something you apply after the site is up, It needs to be part and parcel with your planning
