Search engine optimization HTML oriented can be really helpful, but I think websites owners should focus the quality of the site, not necessarily the search engines crawler and the way it scan their site.

When you have a quality website, you will get more inbound links and more traffic automatically;


My tips


1. The King: Quality content. The major factor of quality is qality content.
Add your site a lot of quality and relevant information: text, picture, video, articles, PDF files. Make your website the bestsource of information regarding your field.

2. Let visitors create content and share their knowledge.
Add your website forums, chat or comments engine.
Use those systems to keep in touch with your visitors.

3. Don't wait. Change and update your website frequently.
Make it worthwhile to visit your website frequently.
My advise is to make the homepage as a updates page.

4. Make a friendly Sitemap . Don't create a boring page with links to every page in your website.
Make an attractive table of contents with description and even cute icons. Visitors leave sites when they don't understand its concept immediately.

5. Don't be stingy - Link to other websites.
Yes guys! link to others.
if you know, heard or using a good relevant website, write an article and add a link. Visitors attract websites which recommend website with good content.

6. Add your website free tools, features, such as calculators, checkers, games and other free content. Give users reasons to tell about your site to others.

7. Add your website a newsletter service.

8. Make it easy for visitors to contact costumers service or administrator
Show them that you care.

9. Updates. Add your website RSS service. Make your website be more up-to-date.

10. Quick navigation. Add your website a search box - Help users finding what the are looking for.

11. Blog it. People like personal information from trusted person. Ass a personal and proffesional blog. Advise for one-man site is to make your blog as the "updates page". Tell your visitors about new issues regarding your websites and new content of your website.

12. Create registration system and give users good reasons to become members.

i would add that getting a 1-800 number helps too....really makes the website (and company) look legit

Regarding your great tip (1-800-... number), I believe commercial-websites should be visitors-oriented. Website-owners should let the clients know the company is doing the best in order to supply the best service. Perfect clients-service is a great way to viral-market your website.
