Effect of Outgoing Link from Index Page on Site...

Hi Everyone,

I having a website related to the "wedding dresses and accessories supplier". Actually i am not an SEO expert and the problem is that the index page of my site contains the various Out bound links ( as much as 5) directly from it. So many of my friends told me that it can hurt the Ranking of my site and they suggest me to shift those Out bound links to another page ( like on link or resource page) so that it can't directly hurt my ranking....

I really dont know whether they are true or not? Please suggest me...

If the links are relevant you don't have to worry about, if irrelevant your link partner will not get so much benefit of it. in both the cases you are not going to hurt.

Actually those links are of my suppliers links....

OBL's from your home page would only serve to pass the highest amount of page rank, only because your home page is most likely to be have your highest page rank. This is what makes a link from your home page so valuable and the reason why so few sites give them away.

Other than that, as long as they're relevant and all of them lead to quality sites, there's really no risk in having them there.

I personally wouldn't have those outbound links on my home page. They take pride of place in your site wide menu. Are they competitors? They are similar content sure, but they appear on every page and every time a page loads it's an excuse for your visitor to leave.

For reasons unrelated to page rank or suspicious linking, I would put them on a resources page.

Why don't you experiment? Install Google Analytics, let it gather some data for a few weeks and see what happens when you push these links on to a separate page. Does your bounce rate drop? Do you start to see an increase in traffic? etc...

OBL are perfectly fine on your page as long as they are there for your end visitor.

If such outbound links are not to any bad neighborhood site, no need to worry about them. In terms of ranking (SERP), it may have a slight effect should your visitors decide to go directly to those sites and not come back. Google might view your site as less prominent for your keywords should that happen.

In the recent google PR update, my site have lost the PR from 2 to 1 ..so is that what happen about which i was afraid of initially ...have it cost my site to having so many links on index page of it.......

i am really worried about it and don't know what to do now?
..........

Well it will pass PR juice to your partner. If you are not referencing any thing with that link than it will not be productive for your visitor as well you too .

the better way is to move that links at other page.

I would tend to agree with your friends advice personally. you have 12 links on the page, seven link out to friends or partners.

so 7/12 of your available pagerank leaves your site instead of being directed into your inner pages, eveningwear, posh frocks etc which im assuming you'd like to rank too? not ideal IMO.

nearly all the sites you link out to have higher PR than you and hence don't need your help anyway, personally i would be thinking about nofollowing those links.

...expect that will cause ructions round here though
