Website Architecture
I have a website that needs some attention SEO wise, we have decided that it really needs a complete overhaul.
The client produce two similar products used for different purposes in different industries. At the moment they have three website, one for each target industry and an 'umbrella' site. We plan to consolidate everything onto their umbrella site so the authority is no longer split between 3 domains (it also seems logical).
Each industry has 6 main keyphrases that we are targeting. So do we:
A ) Create two folders on the domain and choose the main keyword form each industry as the name for the two folders, and then group all pages for each industry into their respective folder, with each page name targeting different phrases. This solution would give the two index pages for each industry a lot of authority.
B ) Create 12 folders, one for each keyphrase. From an SEO point of view I'd be ignoring the split between the two industries. This would mean that each folder will have less pages than the option above, but each folder name and content would be more targeted to the keyphrases.
C ) Forget about grouping the pages into folders and leave them all in the root directory, with keyphrase targeted names.
Currently the umbrella site (now 2 years old) has a PR of 3, one of the industry websites has a PR of 3 and is 8 years old (and a lot of original content - 150 industry articles), and the other industry site is 2 years old and has a PR of 2. The redundant sites will be 301'ed to the umbrella site.
The client is considered one of the top suppliers in both industries and competitors sites have no greater PR than 3.
I've 95% decided on the route I'm taking, but wanted to get some views.
