Hi all,
I am trying to optimize a site for a client of mine, but i honestly can't figure out what more i can do... his rankings are decent but the client wants to be number 1 for each keyword he has targeted... Now I told him there is no way i can promise this he is still pushing me, and i want to know if there is anything i can do to push up his usage and rankings The company provides yacht agency and yacht brokerage services in malta and whats to be first for the following keyords: along with any other word that has to do with these words The site is Boatcare Trading Limited - Yachts malta Is there any other way to improve rankings without increasing the text content on the site? Because the client wants to minimialise the text. As you can see i have done all the tagging necessary, but it still leaves me with few words per page. It would be brilliant if you could help me out... cause I am truly Lost! Last edited by incrediblehelp; 05-02-2008 at 11:53 AM. Reason: Removed link promotion |

There are tons of things you can do to improve on the site's rankings in the SERPs.
1.) Remove the JavaScript from the page source code and link to it from an external file. 2.) Remove the CSS styles from the page source code and link to it in an exernal CSS stylesheet. 3.) Change your page title to utilize your most targeted keywords and/or keyphrases. This might be better: HTML Code:
<title>Yacht Brokerage Services Agency MaltaK/title>
Try something like this: HTML Code:
<meta name="keywords" content="boats, yachts, maintenance, marine, repairs, overhauls, charters, cleaning, malta" /> <meta name="description" content="Boat maintenance & all inclusive yacht charters, guardiannage, marine repairs and overhauls with management services from BoatCare Trading Ltd." /> 6.) Your page heading is all wrong. HTML Code:
<h1 class="text">© Boatcare Limited- All Rights Reserved.</h1> Placed right before your body text, it should be "keyphase rich" and complementary to the page title. Try to keep it short. Edit the same elements on each specific page, create a new sitemap, submit it and wait for the Google to spider your site. In addition, try to use the page title, meta description and keywords tags when submitting the site to directories. There, now you've no excuse to fail at global domination in your niche.

There are so many things wrong with this page from an SEO viewpoint that I cannot even begin to tell you what to do.
I'd say, do some more homework on it or find someone who can help you with the SERP's. Please don't be offended but there really are ways to honestly improve SERP's. Good luck.

As it is always difficult to achieve the goal of clients like these, I would say pay a bit more attention to the way your website is build.
All points Dubbya made here earlier I would seriously follow up! And then come back here again...

Set-up and use nofollow and robot.txt as well. I would nofollow that findit link, all the news links and anything else non-related.
Also, I'd link build a lot more. Right now you don't have that many links: https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.co...&bwmo=d&bwmf=u Last edited by GonnaLuvIt; 05-02-2008 at 08:04 PM. |

I'd like to be #1 for all of my keywords too... wouldn't we all??? If the client is pushing you follow some of the excellent advice given here and then - push back! SEO's can NEVER promise #1 results. Aside from fixing some of the aforementioned items as well as starting a blog...in my opinion words are very necessary. Let the client know what the real deal is.
What are you using for spider food if not keyword rich text and content? Why would the spiders want to come back if there is so little to "eat" on the site? It's just my opinion... and a little common sense. Good luck to you. |

This is not intended as a put down, but it won't be pretty. I hope it is at least helpful to you and your customer.
I agree with many of the previous comments and I am totally confused. Part of my confusion comes from this: Quote:
In fact however, I do not see much evidence that these pages or this site were SEO optimized for any keywords, nor can I understand what keywords you might be optimizing for. The site would appear to be partly optimized for keyword "boatcare." Since nobody will be searching for that keyword, I do not see the point of that. Even that is not optimized very well. Advice for free - Do everything everyone else has suggested. Think about specific keywords that might be popular in search engine searches (Marine services, yachts, boat maintenance - whatever people use) and optimize at least the main page for one or two such words (Boats, Yachts). Look at examples of well optimized pages to see what things people do to highlight keywords. Check any SEO hint list or manual. Think about how search engines work and what might cause Google or Yahoo web bots to "think" that a page is associated with a particular word. They are little machines and do not have ESP. They only know what is in the text. Also think about how a search engine bot is supposed to follow a javascript menu link. Answer - it can't really and those links do not count. Make a list of pages and keywords that are supposed to be optimized on that page and do a check list. Are the words in the title? In the description? In a static html link to that page? At the bottom of the page? In a keywords tag? In alt tags of static images? Mentioned in the text? In <H1> heading? What % of the content of the page is Javascript and html code junk? An optimized page should be over 60% text at least. Use a CSS and Jscript includes to get rid of some of the extra code. Is every page accessible by some path from the main page via static html links? Does every page link to the main page with a static html link that has meaningful anchor text with the site keyword? That's what I can say for free and in public. ami.isseroff(at)gmail.com for more info and help. Last edited by ami_iss; 05-02-2008 at 08:48 PM. Don't apologize for being blunt. I think we need more bluntness out there.
I'm totally stunned how many people advertise SEO services and are apparantly clueless at it. I've seen more web designers who advertise SEO service whose title tag on their own website is "Welcome to (enter company name here)"

Even I am not seo expert at all I can tell that there is a lot of things on this website you can improve. For the beginning you don't have keyword and description meta tags.
Than You have much too much unnecessary java script and css code in your head sections that you can have in separate external files. I did not see any H1, H2 .... tags on your source code. This is just a couple of simple things you can change on that site for the beginning. Other thing you can consider is to explain to your client to hire professional SEO Company.

1. use external style sheets
2. move the java scripts to external files 3. use bold and italics where your keywords are visible on the page 4. use H1, H2 etc. 5. improve title and other meta tags. 6. your website is designed using image ready, which is not the perfect way to going about it., use dream weaver / css. if you still can't succeed then consult with a professional seo agency.

Ouch - where do I start?
Numerous coding problems - over 30 serious coding errors and over 100 other problems; No keyword or description metatags - and when you do them, please remember the first rule - maximum 256 characters. Those two are the main problems, and the result of the first is an atrocious load time. Get the coding right first, then put in the metatags, then come back to ask for help doing the serious tweaking. Barry |

Coming back for a 2nd round... It seems we all agree that this site was hopeless. That leaves two possibilities:
1- Whoever posted this was having us on - maybe the forum moderators did it in order to "see what would happen." or 2- The person was serious. There is always that possibility no matter what we may think. If so then whoever it was should come back and try to explain how that site is optimized for whatever keywords it might be optimized. I couldn't find them among first 10 in Google for Malta Yachts or Malta Marine or Malta Boats. They do appear in first 10 for Malta Yacht Care but that is probably not going to draw a lot of visitors. There is always the possibility they know something we don't. If so, they should tell us. OTOH right now possibility #1 looks like the most reasonable explanation. |

Quite simply, acquire more good relative links first. I have just been down the road of optimising our site for the last six months. Although a well optimised site helps, I found that links were the most effective in getting better placement. Not 100's of links to everyone, just ones with good PR that are in your industry that have your keywords (the ones that are hard to get
Not to say you should not do all the abovementioned, but prioritise link building. |

I have to agree with the criiticism about SEO services when you don't seem to understand the essential thrust that needs to apply to any website. However, I'll also admit that you're by no means alone in this defect. Understanding the basics of page titles, meta tags, keywords, and all such intricacies is, in my view, simply a starting point and I suspect you have at least sufficient hang of them.
What's missing from the Boatcare site as it is, though, is a clear and unmistakble explanation -- and therefore emphasis -- on your client's Unique Selling Proposition. Who, for instance, are the target cutomers (i.e. who's in need of the services the company offers)? Where are they (likely to be) located? What search words/phrases are they probably going to use (and I agree that "boat care" isn't going to be very often typed into the search box)? And, as much as anything, how are you going to reach them -- i.e. specifically rather than in a general sense of using the internet? The site does turn up on Google's second page if I search for "yachts malta" or "yacht services malta" but I hate to think how well it will do if I leave the word "malta" out. Heaven knows how many firms exist worldwide in the business of catering to yacht owner service needs! No, tweeking the site's code won't do much harm, but I'll strongly question whether it's going to do much good. What's called for is a focus on why yacht owners should contact Boatcare instead of anyone else. What do they offer that no-one else does or that they do more cheaply / more quickly / more efficiently/effectively / whatever / than anyone else? Can/will they cater to any owner anywhere? What proof/evidence of all this can they provide? Who has already used their services. How satisfied were they -- and why? Etc., etc., ad nauseum. It's questions such as these and your efforts to come up with the answers that will point you in the direction you nend to go. In other words, it isn't so much more SEO your client needs. It's a decidedly clearer idea of the business they're in, who can make use of it, and what "sales pitch" is required to make them sail (even across the world if needs be) to ge what they need -- and deserve -- if they really care about the yachts they own. Ok Guys, You've provided me witha lot of great tips in this...
Now as re seo I am new at this but this client contacted me seeing my success for my website findit.com.mt. I took it on using the same principles i did on my site... Now from what i read on this site and other SEO manuels was that the site should be... 1 updated regulary (hence the Java script news feed) 2 keyword rich - the problem is he doesn't want too much text in the site. 3 the keywords i am targeting are page specific... so eg Boatcare Trading Limited - Boat & Yacht Repair Malta has all images with alt tags saying "yard works malta" and other things to the like, i would use the term "new boats malta" on the yard works page 4 I updated his title tags so they have as few keywords as possible. the original developers of the site used the title tag "Boatcare Trading Limited. Boatcare offers a multitude of excellent services related to all things yachting, from boat maintenance to guardiannage and boat management, repairs, overhauls and delivery" for each page. I reduced it to " Boatcare Trading limited - {page topic} " 5 I had advised him to start answering questions in forums that have to do with yachting and boating, especially ones that have to do with the Mediterranean, and make sure he has his domain link in the signature. Till now he has not started. 6 I had created a Blog for him using blogger. Unfortunately he does not post on the site. I created 4 posts for him so far, but again unless he posts there is little i can do. 7 as re the coding errors - this bit i didn't know and will get to work on them, same with the <h1> tags. Can i use an <h1> tag and place an image in between, and have the alt text as the title? The Keywords disappeared because I had linked them to the site... and following the first comment i removed them because i didn't know it was wrong. Basically I am using local targeting so all the keywords should include malta, which is the island we operate from. We are not trying to get #1 ranking on Boats, but Boats malta These are the keywords we are targeting: Buy boats malta buy yachts malta douglas marine malta Salona Boats malta New Boats Malta new yachts malta boat management malta Boat Washing malta boat maintenance malta salona malta Boat Chandlery Malta Yachts malta Boats malta Elan Malta Elan boats Boat Brokerage Malta Boat Charter malta Yacht Brokerage Malta Yard works Malta Sailing courses malta Sailing Lessons Malta Yacht Chandlery malta Superyachts malta superyacht services malta yacht agency malta yacht management malta yacht brokers malta boat brokers malta plus a whole bunch more.... I do have first page ranking in many of these words, but the client wants more and more. Also Should I recode their website... I know i can amend content and tags, but would i be crossing the line between SEO and web developer if i ammend their code? I do agree more linking is needed to the site, as i know they are low... but i was wondering what weight that carries - because my site findit.com.mt has very few external links but ranks #1 for most pages Thanks for all your help everyone... I'll update you once i am done. Btw what is the going rate for these services - I'm only charging my client like $100 usd... but it seems a lot of work for little return. Thanks Findit |

Why is your client so against text on the site? It's been my experience that keyword rich text is one of the most important aspects of SEO. Not only does it improve your SEO efforts, if it's used correctly, it can be a powerful tool in converting those website visitors to clients.
We always tell our clients that you can have the best rankings in the world, but if no one clicks the purchase button or their phone doesn't ring, then what good is a #1 ranking? If your client doesn't care enough about the website to keep it updated... even through a blog, then how do they expect it to produce results for them? If I never changed the oil on my car, I certainly wouldn't expect it to get me where I wanted to go for very long! |
|
||||
|
ok i've found sometime to ammend the front page of the site....
is that better? Or is there more I have to do? BtW someone mentioned Keyword research... I did this previous to starting any work on the site about a month ago using the keyword tool in Google Adwords... is that the best way or do you suggest something else? Thanks again for all your help, and your constructive (blunt |

Hi
First of all you have to research more and try to find out 7 to 9 most relevant keywords and stuck all your others keywords phrases around these 7 or 9 . then try to establish your title tag, include at least few keywords from those selected and then use proper H1 H2 tags, bold some keywords on your pages, Make interlinking of page on selected keywords on your pages.... try to generalize your Meta tags with selected keywords ,remove duplicate entries..... besides this all always work on off page optimization and work & regularly. |

How many more links are needed for becoming # 1? I see that all advice given here is in the form of "Do so and so and your rankings will improve", but this is not enough for his client.

That depends upon the competitor links. If you can analyze the competitor links that will be good.

Nonsense. You can check the number of inbound links of the fifty top listings in the SERPs for any search query and you'll see that they are not arranged by the descending order of the number of links. A page with fifty links may rank better than a page with ten thousand links.

b. The properties of a web page include what you've written in: The issue should be more asking yourself...why should my website be number one over the current website? Do you have more and more relevant links?... IS your website more optimized than number one? plus other measurable properties like PR and distance from optimal keyword density, etc. and observable properties like quality of metatags, etc. - what SEO workers look at while comparing two listings on the same SERP. And you write: Almost always when I compare websites not ranking to ones that are ranking a SOLID case can be made for why the website doesnt rank. But this statement is false. The fact is that in a very large number of cases (about a third) the upper page has poorer properties than the lower page - fewer links, lower PR, poorer optimization - despite the fact that Google obviously considers the upper page more relevant. And therefore you can't make a solid case why the lower page doesn't rank better than the upper page. Last edited by emanuelh; 05-20-2008 at 12:24 PM. |

This fact requires explanation. By running to comparisons between # 5 and # 25 you don't solve the mystery but run away from it. What you express in fact is not the result of thorough observation but an a-priori belief that you are going to see clearly why one page is on top of another. Now, the larger the gap between the two listings being compared, for instance between listings from the # 1-10 with listings from #991-1,000, you will indeed observe that the last ones have indeed very poor on page and off page "factors" in comparison. I state that this is what creates the illusion that you can see clearly why one page is on top of another. The daily work of SEO is rarely to make pages jump at once from # 1,000 to # 10, more often it is to figure out what has to be done quantitatively to make the page climb from # 11 to # 10. fewer links
It is not about quantity, it is about quality. That is your first problem. lower PR LOL, toolbar means nothing when deciding why one website ranks above another. poorer optimization quality of the page Sure this makes a difference and should be looked at. |

Don't do that for real... I was looking at the indexed pages, but I don't seem to be able to find many of your keywords in the titles of the site. And move the company name to the end of the title, that may help increasing the CTR in the SERPs.

Please explain how can it help increase the CTR in the SERPs.
|

It has to do with expectations. When doing a search the focus is on the keyword of the search. The further to the beginning of the line the keyword is found, the bigger the chance the link is clicked.
It's not something that makes a huge difference, but all little bits together do help.
