Some term it as Google Dancing. You may even experience the site go out of top 100 pages. If you want to have a stable SERPs, then you need to concentrate on promoting and acquiring good BLs.

It's because you're accessing different datacenter.

This might have something to do with it - Google Everflux
Also, the Dewey Update will have been messing up SERPs for a few days last week.

This will happen for 2 reasons:
1. Whenever you do major changes in the site, the ranking positions will fluctuate, after certain time they will get stable.
2. Getting results from different Google data centers.
Thanks,
Amar.

Once again, Inertia nails it!
Since Google is constantly spidering the web, evaluating pages comparatively according to their algorithm, your results will fluctuate until the process is complete. There's nothing you can do but ride it out.
Even the most stable sites rise and fall but things usually return to normal when the process has been completed.

Re: Ranking Position stability in Google?
SERP fluctuation is a common thing....there are thousands fighting for the same keywords...so one has to carry on with the optimization process to keep the position for each keyword.

Re: Ranking Position stability in Google?
Thanks for taking the time to post that article Jaan!
It definitely provides some great insight in "Previous Query" and I think it's something we need to keep an eye on.
Now, how the heck are we supposed to optimize for that? (It's a rhetorical question)

As far as I can tell, everflux means very little sudden changes in the SERP's. No more dancing once a month but more like non-stop slowdancing. Actually I observe that changes usually happen during the weekends. Not like huge changes, but every weekend they update something.
Stuff moving up and down like described, is more likely the effect of that major update that was mentioned.
