I think the first two replies have it about right. I think incredibles answer covers it exactly.
So I will simply add another perspective if I can. Getting other webmaster to link to you is often difficult, the best sites to get links from are usually in direct competition. To compensate for this try to create pages that the user will want to come back to. Depending on your niche market you need to have pages that users bookmark. You want them to make sure they will want to find that page again. Simply try not to include anything that users will not want to visit again, let the page tell them they will miss out if they do not come back. Dump all the rhetoric. One user that returns to your site next week is worth gold to a webmaster. If someone does this he attaches a bit of self ownership, he will tell his mates. try to look at your page through a new users eyes. . . If you can grab every new user . you can forget worrying about who links to you, it will not matter. . your user base will slowly grow. Depending on your niche this may not be easy. But it surely must be your goal. My latest attempt at grabbing new users is here. classic car parts It is getting closer every year to this goal. I do not know if there are any elements of this page that you can use, but I do know there is a lot of competition selling classic car parts, including ebay craigslist and thousand of specialist sites. . your niche will have equally tough competition. making your goal 'just accumulating links' Will not work you need to accumulate users. (Google is not a user) do not aim your site at Google

Be active in Forums of your niche. You can generate a few links by it and also built up your reputation by answering questions of users.
Perhaps the link is not even the most important in this. After a while users will trust you. Someone may tell to his friends aobut you: "Hey, this guy helped me a lot. Just ask him about "xyz", if you need help!" I know, its hard to get users even with good content, when you have a small niche (like mine for example). So go there, where your users possibly are, talk to them and help them. Last edited by Morricone; 02-14-2008 at 09:55 AM. |

My strategy that works excellentso far:
* Pages where the links will live must be indexed by Google, Yahoo, MSN and Ask. * Page Rank of the page where the link will live, will be visible in the Google Toolbar. * Domain must be at least 1 year old or must not be expiring before 3 years. * Different C-class IP. * Content relevance of the linking website to the content of your websites. * Should not be living on pages with which end with links.php. or links.html, links.asp, links.jsp or so ever. Not even similar... * The links should not have rel="nofollow. * The pages the links will live should not have a nofollow meta tags. * The pages the links will live should not be disallowed in the robots.txt * The pages the links will live, should have maximum 60% OBLs of the total links of the living page (including the internal links). * Relevant keyword/ key phrases which is used in the anchor text of the links to the content of your page that the link points to. * Keep checking your links on those pages once a week to make sure they appear in there, and if they have a well position or not. * No Dynamic link or redirection link. * We do not use link popularity software. * Not from directories, blogs and article directories. * No FFA website. * No adult website. * No link farms. I hope I did not forget something.

May be a new concept to some visitors:
"Pinging is the act of notifying blog directories and search engines that your blog has been updated with a new post. The more pinging services that you have listed, the higher chance that your blog will be noticed and picked up by new sources and search engines".
