Like Google and other crawler based search engines, you do not need to waste time submitting - if you have good links to your site, they will find and index you.

There is that possibility that some of us want to "waste our time" submitting to SLURP and other SE's instead of patiently waiting. So the information requested really would be helpful, if someone knows.

You are better off spending time getting links than submitting - it really dosen't help. Google's submit URL is probably no better than a placebo and Yahoo do not even have that option (at least they are being more honest than Google by not having it).

I have not submitted a new/changed site to any crawler based SE for approaching 2 years now.

Are there non-crawler based SE's it is worth submitting to? If so, how often should the same site be resubmitted?

Resubmitting to search engines is a waste of time - it does not help.
The only non-crawler based SE's are really directories (eg DMOZ etc) - resubmitting to them will get you labeled a spammer.

Yahoo doesn't provide a way to submit your site (or if they do I haven't found it) other than submitting to the Yahoo directory: Suggest a site to the Yahoo Directory.

See Yahoo's Guidelines for Webmasters:

Quote:
How do I add my site to your search engine database?
Yahoo! Search crawls the web every 2-4 weeks and automatically finds new content for indexing. If pages already in the Yahoo! Search index link to your site, it will be considered for inclusion in the next update of the index. Getting your site listed in major directory services such as the Yahoo! Directory and DMOZ is an excellent way to be sure that there are links to your site.

THANK YOU for answering this question. I wanted to know the answer, too. I really appreciate your efforts in formulating clear responses to newbie questions like this. I consider it part of the learning process, and this forum is a great learning place.

May I suggest that answering a question by saying "it's a waste of time" is not useful. What IS useful is answering a direct question with an equally direct answer. Then adding the "but I think it's useless because blah blah blah" if that's your opinion.

I am going to have to eat my words. Yahoo will be introducing a free url submission next week. This is not the paid inclusion that is replacing the Inktomi ones 15 April.

However, a Yahoo rep said at WMW that "The primary means of generating our index is via our free crawl, using our new Yahoo! Slurp crawler. Yahoo! Slurp discovers pages by following links on the web"

So it does not mean that the submit URL will actually help - links are still king

...which is fine if you introduce a new site that you can link to from one of your older sites, or if you are a designer for another webmaster, you can link to it from your "design" page, or if you have friends that will link to you, etc., etc.

But if it is a brand new site, put up by the owner/webmaster, and there are no links to it, I would surmise that there is still a point to using manual submission to Google or other search engines and directories... once you have that first link, then yes the other crawler-based engines will find and index you eventually...

I found one! I went to the Yahoo Italian Business, B2B directory/Industrial supplies/pumps and was able to submit a site free of charge.

But thats the Directory and not the search Index. A commercial site is incredibly unlikely to be given a free listing in the Directory even under the 'free' submit to the Directory. Did they list you in the Directory category?

Hello, Valeria:

It looks like you submitted to a category in the Yahoo Directory (see link in the quote above) rather than to Yahoo's new search engine.

Yahoo has recently announced plans to include an "Add URL" button for their search engine (WPW member cbp says it will be next week), although they have also said that won't guarantee that they will include your site in their index... nonetheless, it will at least give us all something to click on :-)

Yes, I obtained a free listing for another client - I have 7 clients who manufacture pumps and I am starting to have problems being equally loyal to all of them :-(

You are a mine of information, there should be a way to watch all your posts.
I immagine that they won't have time to check all the sites submitted, but if I don't try I'll never know :-)
Actually I think they're focusing on the sites submitting for directories that are not sufficiently 'plump': some time ago, I tried to submit a site to another Italian business - category I don't remember which - and I bumped on the Express Submit.
In any case I think that sections in foreign language may provide an extra chance to be found.
