I saw a post (seems that on this forum) saying that Google decided to put less weight into backlinks gained from the subdomains of one domain (so-called subdomain links).
Can anyone drop a URL to this forum thread, because I did a search and did not find it.

This isn't from Google, but it's a reliable source:
Subdomains are finally getting the same treatment as folders by Google | Fathom SEO Search Engine Marketing Blog You would be correct... sub-domains are now being considered part of the same site. Essentially, the sub-domains' links are going to be considered internal (rather than external) links, which might hurt some larger websites. It basically encourages websites to get more inbound links from external sources. |

And links from subdomains of external sites?

Place link in the header and footer of both domain and subdomain.

The question is, will the backlink be natural. I believe that subdomains are still considered a seperate domain, however, according to what I read from Matt Cutt's, the change is in the philosophy, if a domain has a good reason to get a SERP based on relavence, they are pruning the results for that domain.
My logic, though very fallible, would be to explore worpress.com and about.com If you can do a site: command on a sub-domain, I think it's still considered it's own domain as long as it's content is VERY different from the main domain. |
