I am considering moving server for 1 of my sites, right now the site gets good SEO in Google, Yahoo and others and around 400 visitors per day without advertising etc..
If I moved the server would the SEO be effected in any way?? The main reason for doing this is I would have all the sites under 1 Web Host Manager and save some cash also. Thanks

Moving hosts should not affect your SEO at all if the site is never down. And even a brief down time should not have any effect.

I think that you may well see a temporary dip in rankings. The age of a domain and the IP address are both factors in the algorithms, and switching IP's often causes a temporary dip while the search engine gains trust in the new IP. I've generally seen the dip last a few weeks, but always hard to predict exactly.

Investigate before you switch to another host if they have a bad reputation. That can hurt!

For such a good traffic I don't see why you should take the risk to switch of host just to save a few bucks, unless you have special issues with that host. Especially if you have links from other sites on the server you are planning to move to, the links from those sites will be highly devalued because they will be now on the same IP.

We recently switched servers to a more reliable host. This included changing IP addresses from a US based host to a local Aussie host.
We saw a dip that lasted a few days and nearly gave me a heart attack. It's tough when you're used to being #1 and depending on it then suddenly you're #5. Thankfully after a few days we were back at #1. |

I swiched servers a few years back and never noticed any change whatsoever to any of my websites.

Just a sideline comment -- you mentioned you wanted to save money by having all sites under one site manager.
Have you considered that if that host goes down, none of your sites will be accessible? I have some of my 'minor' sites under one host, but my primary ones are all hosted separately. Just something to think about. |
