Hi,

Can someone please tell me what the use of the HREF BASE tag is supposed to be and is it of any benefit in SEO terms?

For an explanation of HREF BASE go here. Personally I wouldn't worry about it for SEO

hi Mondo

I've only ever seen href base used in framesets and badly put together websites.

It has no benefit as far as SEO is concerned. Stick to the elements that do work (content, quality links etc).

It's only really useful if you use relative linking, and even then it's a bit patchy. If you do things the correct way and use absolute linking then there's really no need for the base tag.

As far as "SEO" (in quotes because I am not really sure it falls under that category) I have seen bots from smaller engines choke on links because of the base tag. Typically, this tag is intended for use in large scale corporate sites where a section might be moved around so a single change to the page could keep all the links on the page relevant, but now there are better back-end tools for managing this, so the base tag will possibly be deprecated soon. In any case, as previously mentioned, it is not getting much use anymore.
