Default Top Ten Directories with Bulletproof PR?

With all the hoopla over paid links and PR updates, the tried and true directories are even more important. There are some good threads around on directories, especially this List of High Ranking Directories but some of those are outdated now, and I thought it would be a good time to create a top ten directory list.

These directories are either free or have a review fee and are indexes that I feel are likely to retain their ability to pass PR to listings. Not sure about bulletproof, but they are all human reviewed, and as a result, Google has some assurance that included sites are not spam.

Top Directories for Link Building

1. DMOZ - http://dmoz.org (FREE)
2. YAHOO - http://dir.yahoo.com ($299/year)
3. GoGuides.org - http://www.goguides.org/ (
$69.95 one time review fee)
4. Jayde - http://www.jayde.com/ (FREE)
5. JoeAnt http://www.joeant.com (Submission is free, but $39.95 review fee guarantees 48 hour review.)
6. Gimpsyhttp://www.gimpsy.org (Free or shorter review time for $25.)
7. O1WebDirectory - http://www.01webdirectory.com/ (Offers a refundable
$49 review fee if not accepted.
8. Yeandi:http://www.yeandi.com/ (Free submit may take 4-6 weeks, review fee $20 for 48 hour review)
9. Best of the Web Blogshttp://blogs.botw.org/ ($39.95 One-Time Review Fee)
10. RLROUSE Directoryhttp://www.rlrouse.com/add-url.html ($49.95 one time fee.)
11. WebWorldIndexhttp://www.webworldindex.com Offers free or 7 day review for $25 that keeps link at the top for one year.

Yep, that’s more than 10 and I haven’t even added business.com yet …

Good places to research directories:

1. Well do these directories that clearly sell the positions state as such on the website? Google likes when they do this.

2. The ones that are free shouldn't be effected by this latest update considering it was targeting paid link sellers.

3. Lastly do any of them use nofollow on the links or block any PR/link juice passing by 301/302 redirecting the URL for tracking reasons?

All these directories state their terms very clearly ... and they are free or pay for review.

I checked them all in the last day or so and all have maintained their PR in the recent update.

I have not checked recently for no follow tags ... but I have checked before and I did not see any. I am not sure how to be certain that there are no other tricky redirects ... but they did not use tracking links when I checked.

Of course, one should check all these things before submission to any directory or site.

That's an excellent list with great info, and the directories ordered by PR, though I didn't check and see if they were updated ... nonetheless an great resource, kgun, thanks!

The number one DMOZ is being penalized by Google as what I have read from other forums....

I hate DMOZ since the controversy about bad and corrupt editors.. Telling those already included in their site that if they don't pay for the inclusion their site will be removed... Is that what DMOZ really for free inclusion?

Well, I have had the inkling, but not confirmed, that DMOZ listings are not the boon they once were. Good thing, as it's nearly impossible to get listed. On the other hand, it really was a great project - crappy spammy sites did not get listed so it was a legitimate "vote" for a site.

Coolguy, could you substantiate the penalization of DMOZ, please?

I do believe, wholeheartedly, that there is very little of the sort of corruption you refer to. I am not saying it doesn't ever happen, but it is rare. I was an editor for years and there were so many watchdogs in and out of DMOZ that I doubt seriously that anyone would get away with that for long. It was a regular occurrence for people to email the editors complaining of unfair treatment on how sites were described - never mind ratting out people who did take money for listings ... and that did occur ... but it was rare and any suspicion like that resulted in the immediate dismissal of an editor ... no investigation, no warning. All complaints are taken seriously and scrutinized. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if that vigilance over other editors' work probably is one of the main reasons there is little time to add new listings. Just kidding, but only half kidding.

Cheers, MJ

Does anyone have the real answer to getting free or paid links from directories such as Yahoo, Joeant, etc...? Right under the Google guidelines it states. "

Submit your site to relevant directories such as the Open Directory Project and Yahoo!

I'm sure we have all read this a dozen times and feel a bit misguided. What makes Joeant or any other directory different than dmoz or yahoo? They blatently tell us to submit our sites there.

More or less, I'm looking for some guidance on whether to build some links through reputable directories or not. I have several sites that have directory links in place including the DMOZ, but I'm wondering if I should continue with new campaigns.

Joeant charges one time fee for site review and inclusion. That is not considered as a paid link.

I believe that links from quality directories are useful; I base that belief on seeing directory backlinks in Google.

I do think there is a question about whether DMOZ has the value it once had, as many of its pages no longer have PR ...
