i'd love to know the percentage of people that click on a sponsored link compared to teh no.1 spot in the organic rankings. I'd go 80/20% in favour of organic. Wonder if any research has been done in this area - personally i never click a sponsored link.

seems Rezniz et al (2005) state that the percentage is 82% organic, 18% sponsored very interesting. I bet the more IT literate the person is, the more chance teh have a clicking the organic listing. Therefore as time moves on teh less people will click on teh sponsored link.

I agree that both are useful/necssary. Google insists that there's no connection, but I can't help thinking that they provide something akin to an imprimatur to each other. Especially if your site appears both as an organic result and a PPC ad on the same page, the impression has to, as it were, confirm your importance -- although you do need the URL to be the same.
Everything else aside, though, your ROI is going to very much depend on how well your site and ad are individually geared towards conversion. It's possible that one succeeds better than the other, and this will skew the relationship between them. Duncan

I have had both 1 number natural phrase and PPC
The pages were the same and the natural page had almost 3x times the sign ups. It's best to have both as far as improving your odds of success. Plus it's my belief that it adds a bit to branding as well. I like PPC because it is easier to track your ROI. I use google tools which are pretty sweet. so organic is better in terms of sales or whatever you consider a result however it is harder to maintain and control. Don't put all of your eggs in one basket. I always say both ppc and organic if you have the budget. |

A few years ago a client of mine, a fishing captain in the Florida Keys, shut off his PPC campaign while he looked for a new boat after his burned. His email and phone inquiries dropped by two thirds, and at the time he was #1 for key west fishing organically. So, we concluded that well more than half of his inquiries were coming from PPC ads.
Now, it's important to note that his PPC ad states his rates, which are the highest in Key West. So many of the people who click on the organic results will find out how expensive he is and not opt for his charters, whereas those who click on his ads are already well aware of the cost and are still interested enough to click through and to inquire about a charter. Another client, who has top organic results in Florida Keys Real Estate (#4) dropped their PPC ads a few years ago and didn't feel their business was impacted significantly. So, I would say it varies widely from industry to industry and with the ad copy, as well. FWIW, MJ

Organic probably around 10 times stronger than ppc.

Maybe I am just lucky, or maybe I'm just plain cunning - I have duplicate sites from Different Limited Companies (I own them all) pointing at the same keywords and all of them are listed in their own rights organically. So one 'Company' gets an organic listing and recommends one of my other 'Companies' websites.
But there again - I am a marketer Edit - Oh and by duplicate I mean the theme - not the template

Then it is not duplicate, but hopefully mosaic.
