addon domains will they help?

I would like to know if addon domains is worth the effort. For example my site www.baldeaglegifts.com Would it be better to addon a .net or .us and so on. Or should I changed the name to like baldeaglegiftshop.com
In your opinion what would be the way to go with the searchengines?
