Hi!
Have a question about content. I agreed to help another site owner I know with content by writing articles that I'll post to my site first, so the SEs can spider and index them. This will associate those articles with my site as original content. I learned about doing this here on WPW, by the way. After I check to make sure they've been indexed by the major search engines, I'll notify the site owner I'm helping that it's OK to post the article, which of course will contain a resource box with my site info and a link back to my site. In essence, I'm building content for my site and "selling" it to my friend for a backlink. Question: If he alters my original article by adding a few additional paragraphs, without changing my original copy, will this have an effect on how the SE spiders correlate his version with the original version on my site? In other words, are there any negative consequences for either sites' rankings? I was thinking that it might be best if he placed my article and resource box in their original form on his site and then below my article he could place a "comments" or "additional information" blurb containing his additional info on my article's topic. I'm trying to avoid writing a bunch of articles that only end up confusing the spiders because he's altered my original copy. Any thoughts? Thanks! |

I think you can quote the article (with "") and put an URL to the original site after the quoting, and you shouldn't get penalized.
That's the only way I remember for not getting in problems. |

Thanks for the reponses, gentlemen.
So, Incredihelp, article marketing can result in either article from being removed from the SERPs? Don't the SEs note which version of the article is the original and that all subsequent copies across the Web are the ones that are subject to deletion from the SE indexes? If this were not the case, wouldn't article marketing be a total bust as far as getting one's content on other sites to get those backlinks? I've found my articles on other sites ranking surprisingly well, with some of them ahead of my originals. Any thoughts? Thanks. |

"Sure they try to, but are not always right or accurate when doing so. Sometimes the domain name that copied your content has so much more authority than you that their copied version gets indexed and your doesnt." Now I understand the concern that my original article might not be considered original because of SE error or site authority. That makes sense. And that's the risk someone takes with article marketing. But a question for you, Incredihelp or anyone else with an idea, what about the question in my first post concerning someone revising my article by adding a couple of paragraphs, say, at the end of the article? Would that be considered a new article and would it cause confusion with my original that doesn't have the extra paragraphs? Would the safest thing be to tell my friend that he must print my article as is and then below the resource box put in his two cents worth? Thanks! |

Yes I would have him add his two cents separate, but either way if he re-generates your article the duplication problem will still exist even with his added content. Why doesn't he just include a snippet of the article on a page with his two sense?
