Consider This, before getting those Links

Most people get backlinks to their sites without even considering some important facts about backlinks. But, before getting those links, consider these points:

The relevance of these links to your site is very important. The webpage containing your link should be relevant to yours and/or mention your keyword in it's content. This will help generate traffic and determine your link popularity.

Your keyword should be contained in the anchor text of some of the links to your site. This will help you rank high for your keyword.

Your link building velocity is very important, because Search Engines like Google considers closely the speed at which a site acquires links. So, get backlinks at a slow and consitent rate to avoid suspicion.

Always bear these in mind while getting those links. Of course, go for links from sites with high Page ranking. This is link quality. All these put together determines your link popularity - hence giving you a high PR. Other points are highly welcomed...

most incoming links cannot hurt you even if they are coming from unrelated websites, IMO. only links coming from bad neighborhoods and link farms can hurt you and those also only in very serious cases because otherwise, your competition could get link to your website from these link farms and get you banned. And if that starts happening then the web will break down.

people take this relevancy stuff much more seriously, you should think big here.
for example, to quote and example brad fallon had given in one of his lectures

what do wedding and travel have in common, not much right. But what do people do after they get married, they go on their honey moon; right, so on first look they two categories are not relevant, but on close inspection there is a hidden link.

secondly, think in terms of the 16 Dmoz categories and then go about on your link building.

The main problem is not who is linking to you, but who you are linking out to, that is what matters the most, so inspect websites closely who you consider linking out to because that can damage your rankings.

Fully agree. OBL's should have higher weight's. E.g. linking to a competitior site should be regarded as a + (0.001 factor).

Linking to the original article should in your own article also count positive. Copying part of the original article without citation (linking) should be given a negative weight.

IMO opinion, some SE's are more advanced now. Buying links may not be so profitable any longer.


Problem:

1. In 2004 I set up my first sites, and saw how easy it was to get a Google toolbar rank of 3. Since toolbar rank is a nonlinear (logaritmic) function, it requires more weeks of submitting to get a toolbar rank of 4 or 5.
2. Now I have stopped submitting. And the PR of my other sites still stand on 0 or 1 even if some of them have better content in my view. Example see the last link in my signature. That site has been on the interent more than a year.
3. The real headache for a SE basing their ranking and positioning on the SERP's must be to split sites and pages in two sets. One set with relevant, natural, organic, lateral, contextual links and another set with unnatural with the sole purpose of manipulating the rank and position.
4. Linkfarms, I will expand that definition to social network based linkfarms. If you are a pupil at a high school, and participating in one or more social networsk, it should be no problem for you to outrank and outposition your teacher or professor writing on the same subject. Some days later, your teacher or professor asks you to come up to the blackboard and tell more about your article he found on digg. You walk up to the blackboard and stand there in front of other pupils in the class participating in the same soical network linkfarm.
5. Tell me when a SE bot will take a taste of wine from two online winestores and rank the difference in quality based on taste. It only ranks the difference based on mathematical algorithmes that are very esy to manipulate.

I'm not talking about the problems of linking building, but the facts to consider while acquiring links. It is important to acquire quality links and not just any link from any site.
