Default Sitemaps question

Hi guys,

Is there any real SEO advantage to using XML sitemaps over text file sitemaps?

Many thanks,

The search engines like compressed xml sitemap files because they require less bandwidth to download than a text file.

From an SEO standpoint, using an xml sitemap file allows the webmaster to add some additional relevant information regarding the urls listed.

Any useful information you can send to a search engine spider that might help get more pages indexed and boost your rankings in search engine results pages (SERPS) is definitely beneficial.

If you've only got a few pages, it's not going to make a huge difference. On the other hand, a site with 50,000 pages would likely see some benefits.

XML site maps are easier to create using automated programs.

creating and managing site maps by hand coding is not good practice.

however, you can let the programs create the site maps and then edit and tweak it by hand.

What? Do you want to say here that it is not a good practice to create and manage site maps by hand coding? So am I doing something wrong, as I only do that by hand coding?

It depends on your site navigation structure is. If it is bad, they can be very useful. Otherwise it is just a nice thing to have.

All 3 major SE agreed to use a standard format: sitemaps.org - Home
Why do you want to use ROR?
