Re: With Web 2.0 sites around, Is SEO still necessary
I think there are two quick answers to the question:
1. SEO plays its part in Web 2.0 sites as much as anywhere else. Sure, if you know the URL you can reach anything on YouTube, but this is no different from finding a site on the web. But the key is to be very well placed on any source and this depends on content, content, keywords, keywords, etc., ad nauseum.
2. Web 2.0's audience is less business oriented and, on the whole, a younger one. As has been observed, you're dealing with a Social network. Thus, whether you think SEO is necessary or not, it's abolutely vital if your market is, as it were, non-social searchers.

Re: With Web 2.0 sites around, Is SEO still necessary
As long as people continue to use search engines to find what they are looking for then there will always be a need for SEM and SEO regardless. When the search engines stop getting used for whatever reason, then the need will go away.

"In a nod to the success of emerging Web 2.0 technologies like AJAX and streaming media, one of the country's largest Internet benchmarking companies will no longer use page views as its primary metric for comparing sites...". Duncan, Even a top internet marketer like Mark Hendricks uses myspace and has a page as well, even though as you said it and sites like it tend to skew toward a younger audience.

Yes because SEO traffic is totally different from traffic from social networks.

May be a discussion of interest, that is indirectly related to SEO.
Is it safe to say "AJAX or nothing"?

Re: With Web 2.0 sites around, Is SEO still necessary
I think that the concept will evolve from Search Engine Positioning to Internet Positioning. That means that we have to open our services to make sure that our clients' websites obtain top positions in Search engines and also are commented on social media, raise buzzing in social networks, are quoted in blogs and forums... it is a natural evolution and pure SEO will have to adapt to a whole new environment.

I guess there will always be a place for SEO, though considering how fiercely competitive getting on page one is, its also good to capitalise on The Web 2.0 sites as well.

I have been asking myself the same question braver55b! The simple answer is YES, definitely. Ignore search engines at your peril, but look into the social networks to see what they can do for you as well.

Social Media sites can be a great source of traffic and should be utulized as part of your over all seo and general eMarketing campaign.

Re: With Web 2.0 sites around, Is SEO still necessary
There is a book that handles this topic very thoroughly. The code that follows with the book can be copied directly into your project. The book is
Christian Darie et al (2006 and later): "AJax and PHP - Building Responsive Web Applications." Packt Publishing
There are two different views: - progressive enhancement
- graceful degradation
"The beauty of it is you don't have to. The key concept is called progressive enhancement, and it works like this: - Write the code so that it works with the simplest user agent: anything that supports HTTP and HTML.
- Add 'bells and whistles' unobtrusively: images, CSS, JavaScript, Flash, MathML, SVG, embedded video, ...
This is far easier, and usually yields much better accessibility, than the older concept known as graceful degradation: - Write the code for top-of-the-line user agents, including all cool features.
- Try to make each feature degrade gracefully if not supported".

I suppose traffic from social networks is not a targeted one. I see a huge jump in the google analytics mainly from social networks but conversion wise poor.

I do not agree! I guess you must investigate your site users experience first, before you repeat what you said. Just a tip.

That's a good summary. I like it.
