There are no hard and fast rules in the size - if you are talking about plain HTML sitemaps. Google sitemap has some restrictions though - if my memory serves me right it is about 10,000 links. But then for anything over a few KB you can use a gunzipped version.
For XML sitemaps you can split them into manageable chunks based on some kind of logical order. |

At some point the search engines will stop reading content on a page. SitePoint.com has a good article on it. If your sitemap is so large it probably would be good for usability anyway if you split it up into two or more pages. That way humans can use your sitemap easily as well.

I assume your talking about the sitemap on the actual website and not one that is submitted directly to the search engines?
If you websites architecture is made in a way that is conducive to proper crawling with solid anchor text throughout, your sitemap probably only needs to contain the major categories and pages within your website. Now the sitemap that is submitted directly to the search engines can have 1000's of URLs. |

You can have 50000 links max in an XML sitemap you submit to G. 150 is therefore no problem.
HTML sitemaps for visitors would kind of indicate the site navigation isn't intuitive enough I would say, and if the sitemap is for SEO purposes, XML is far more use.
