Default A quick question about 2 domains

I have got an offer to do the basic SEO for a site. This is a .com site. Now the owner has another site with .net externsion. Both .com and the .net sites share exactly same content. How much bad this can be for SEs?

That's about the worst thing you can do for a site as far as seo is concerned. You'll have to convince the owner to 310 redirect the .net site to the .com site or redo the .net site with completely different content. Even that would be iffy. Maybe you could block all bots to the .net site using robots.txt, but there is no guarantee it won't get crawled anyhow.
Overall, bad idea!

Definitely do a 301 redirect from the .net to the .com.

You'll need to add the following lines of code to a file called .htaccess and place it in the root directory of the old domain:
Code:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^(www\.)?old-domain\.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.new-domain.com/$1 [R=301,L]

DUH! I meant a 301 redirect. Not sure what a 310 redirect is...

Here is an example where duplicate contend on a ".com" and a ".co.uk" works well. The domains in question are tripadvisor.com and tripadvisor.co.uk. Both have the same content, are both hosted in Boston and share the same IP address. Check out #1:

Hoedspruit attractions = google.co.uk (web) returns "tripadvisor.com".
Hoedspruit attractions = google.co.uk (local) returns "tripadvisor.co.uk" supplemental.

The .co.uk domain is definitly not 301 redirect as the contents differs very very slightly from the .com.

My guess is that only one of your .com or .net page will go supplemental (in google). Other search engines might even dish up both (one below the other) in SERP's.

It could be seen as black hat way to spam the organic search results.

First you need to prioritize both the sites based on their Google page rank, keyword rankings (Google, Yahoo, MSN) , indexed pages (Google, Yahoo, MSN) and backward links (Google, Yahoo, MSN).

Then do a 301 permanent redirection from the non performing site to the well performing site.
