New Web Directories

We don't (or at least shouldn't) do things for PR. You should do it because it will bring relevant visitors to your website first and foremost.

Good advice, but mind clarifing? Do users actually use directories to find what they need?
Submitting to directories is a week of hard work and i'm not sure they equal classified ads like a newspaper in being used by consumers.
So my questions are:
1 ) Do users utilize directories?
2) Are they still considered valuable at increasing PR?

PR does matter. It is used by Google and by Yahoo. I certainly agree that content is far more valuable, but PR gets that content looked at alittle closer.

My question is valid & you do not hear many Modorators talking about directories much lately.

Do users use directories and can they still assist with pr?

Most directories I have submited to have "0" PR on the page I submit to and most of the dietctories look way too shakey for any user to bother utilizing.

Please view this more still as a question and not just an opinion. If it has a defensive tone that is because incrediblehelp's replies are usually meant to be more hostile then helpful (no offense incrediblehelp, but scan through the list of your post).

This had never been so relevant than today. This is exacty what I am going to start doing AGAIN!!! Running after PR is like a dog running after it's tail. you will never catch it.

It have been always obvious that you should continiously try to get links for driving traffic to your site. But do you mean with your statement that PR is not important? I hope not.

Actually Google filtered those directories nowadays....Because some are just getting links to achieve high PR. Selling and buying by these PR...

I look at submitting to PR 0 directories as a kind of risk-free gamble. At worst, I get another link. But, you can also get lucky and find a new directory that is actively promoted and eventually rises to PR4 or better. I have links in some good paid directories now only because I got in at the beginning when they were free.

As long as you have the time to submit, I don't see why anyone wouldn't submit to as many free directories as possible. It's the easiest way to get a lot of free links with whatever anchor text you choose. I wouldn't use directories as my only link-building method, but it's a good first step to establish a new site.

It would be if all the links counted; but you get one link and Google doesn't count them after that ... for SEO reasons you are *far* better off in directories.

I've been working on a web directory, myCityBusiness - Local Business Directory It is free to add your business, just make sure you use a valid email address and add mycitybusiness.net to your email filters.

I got sick of trying to find businesses online and none of them were near me. I actually drove 45 minutes to get a part and there was a business right down the road, but they weren't online and their Yellow Pages listing was vague. That why you can add your own key words.

The newest member area of the home page needs some work to make it stand out as its' own entity.

I'd put the vertical navigation back on the left side of the page where users expect to find it.

The copyright notice font size should be smaller, certainly not bold and not larger than the text in the general content of the page.

Thanks Dubbya - I was trying for something a little different with the links on the right. I may move them to the left.

I agree with what you said about the Newest Member, I need to make it "pop". Originally the front page had a flash animation in that spot, but on IE 6 it took forever to load. It was only 120 kb, but the weird thing was that if I hit refresh while it was loading, it would pop right up - since it was inconsistant, and I feared it would scare off visitors with a slow load time, I dumped it.
