Social bookmarking and SEO ?
How is social bookmarking of our websites related to search engine optimization? I could notice a huge increase in traffic after submission to social bookmarking websites. I did the submission myself using relevant keywords and tags. I submitted to above 100 websites. Will this be helpful in sense of SEO?

Re: Social bookmarking and SEO ?
Well, social bookmarking is all about people liking, and linking to you. In the natural scheme of things that's what will happen over time so that's the pattern the search engines expect. If over a very short space of time they spot links from 100 different social networking sites, they might spot it as unnatural, ie you trying to game the system (don't take that as me knocking you - of course you want your site to be sign or you wouldn't have built it) and reduce the relevancy of those links. I believe Google in particular have this kind of witchcraft in their algorithm. MSN on the other hand probably don't.

It won't hurt you to submit to all those sites, but tomcatuk is correct. The real value of social bookmarking is if you are bookmarked and put on a front page of the social bookmarking site.
There is also speculation that Google uses social bookmarking stats such as how many diggs you've gotten to determine the relevance of your site for particular keywords
And if they don't - they're idiots

Re: Social bookmarking and SEO ?
I am testing a bookmarking service right now to test the effect. My hunch is that there won;t be a long term effect.

Social bookmarking sites can help you to increase onsite view and traffic and let your content travel but it will hardly help you for any backlinks as most of the social networkings site are NO Follow.

Re: Social bookmarking and SEO ?
I can see people bookmarks my pages. However, I don't see any major boost in visitors etc. yet. However, I never succeeded in making a proper 100% good linkbait either so

Social Bookmarking & Social Networking are different beasts I thought. Digg is bookmarking - I don't see any evidence of NOFOLLOW there. MySpace on the other hand, is networking. They've incorporated a redirect system that seems to achieve the same result as the NOFOLLOW attribute. I was a bit cheesed off to see my crappy MySpace page effectively "remove" the couple of backlinks it had, but hey ho.
On a side note, my myspace page comes up as No2 and sometimes No1 on Google for the keyphrase "internet idiocy". Just in case anyone wants to see an example of anchor text doing it's job.

Re: Social bookmarking and SEO ?
Jaan - great article.
Do you think it is better to have a separate button for each of the major bookmarking sites, OR would a single button from the likes of Add This! Social Bookmark and Feed Button - Web2.0 Social Media Optimization do just as well while saving some space?
Another thing - if someone already uses a social bookmark site like delicious, surely they will be used to clicking on the 'tag' button on their toolbar anyway? Do you have any stats to suggest it is worth adding buttons to your web site at all?

Also, Jaan (A bit off topic - sorry) - I noticed you have Auction Ads on your blog - have you had any success with these at all? (I have tried them and only got $0.64 after approx 12,000 page views)..

Re: Social bookmarking and SEO ?
I like the current set up on my blog for social bookmarkeing. I dont like having the user go to a different website as with addthis.com.
Yeah I just start with Auction Ads so I dont have hard data as of yet.

Re: Social bookmarking and SEO ?
Quick note on Social Networking. My MySpace page has been dropped by Google. Checked a few others I knew were coming up for a given keyphrases, and none seem to be appearing anymore. Looks to me like the change in linking policy there (msplinks) has caused the profile pages to be dropped. Wonder what impact on MySpaces' traffic (if any).
Anyhows, no further interest in MySpace here!

Re: Social bookmarking and SEO ?
freetraff,
I would start a new thread on this as to not hijack this one. Basically that link can add results from my blog to your personal SERPs when signed in using Google personalized search. These results would appear at the top of the SERP page since you prefer results from that blog. It is pretty neat, but not used or known by many.
So basically if you add my blog pages to your G SERPs and your query something like " SEO for newbies" on Googl.com you should see this page at the top of your Google results.

I placed them on my sites about three weeks ago because I was offered a signup bonus - they look pretty enough, but so far a big fat zero in earnings.
