Default URL STYLES - is this better for SEO?

Hiya,

I came across a website which uses New+York.html as part of their urls. would that make it easier to be picked up by search engines instead of for example: newyork.html or new-york.html?

thanks

T

Not necessarily easier or harder. Just weirder.

I'd still use the dash.

I vaguely remember matt (google) mentioned it is easier to go for "dash" URL. Not sure if anyone come across that as well ?

it must be a mod_rewrite of a dynamic URL or a search result. Go for the dash (-).

I would go for the dash, but you should examine why you need a URL like that at all.

Putting keywords in your url's doesn't help from an onsite optimization (ie title tags, meta tags) perspective, but it supposedly helps your link profile.

If one of your pages is "domain.com/your-keyword.html", there is a chance that someone will link to you using that url in the anchor text. And because google reads a dash as a space, they will have effectively linked to you using the word "Your Keyword" in the anchor text.

So use a dash.

I agree with last three posts above. Go for the dash (-).

For a term like 'New York' it would not vary much if you use like 'newyork.html' 'new-york.html' but for a term like 'Patio Table' it is always better to use url like /patio-table.html or if you can affors a directory structure like domain.com/patio-tables/index.htm

Read this http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/dashes-vs-underscores/ and make up your mind yourself. Issue very well declared.
