Default Indexed pages jump over 50,000 on Google

Hi
Is it possible that Google indexed pages for one of my competitors’ website will jump double?

2 march - 56000 pages
9 march - 55000 pages
16 march – 101000 pages

I can’t find any rational reason that their page suddenly has a double number of pages

Any ideas… ?

I understand that Google gives different results but..
Today 53000 - so what is real number of pages? There is a big difference between 50k and 100k.

It is not uncommon for this number to fluxuate, just like rankings. You are checking different datacenters. What I want to know if why does this number matter at all?

OK I agree with datacenters but my number of indexed pages does not change 100% but 10% (9000/10000).
My boss belives that is one of the reasons why they are higher on Google ranking. I think that it doesn't make difference if you have 10000, 50000 or 10000 pages.
I can presume that their page has easily more that 50k pages if I can see results over 100k.

So more pages indexed means higher rankings? I don't think so. I am trying to grasp what your saying here.

Sure if you website is larger you will have more opportunities to rank, but that is it. It doesn't mean you will rank higher at all.

I also believe that it doesn't have an influence on total ranking. The thing is that if their website indexation jump by 100% I am not able to estimate the real number of pages(it is important for my boss). The only way, I think, is making weekly or monthly average.

They could have just had duplicate versions of each page. A problem many blogs have with Google.

Duplicate content is not penalized, it is filtered from ranking well in the SERPs. Of course these pages can still remain in the index. Have you checked to see if they have new pages in the Supplemental Index?

You got the point, so if their ranking jump 100%, the supplemental index also should jump about 100%.
Am I right ?

No I am just throwing out options here. It would take much more analysis from me to figure out what might have happened.

I've just started two weeks ago so I don't have more info. Today they have 260 indexed pages without the omitted results included and 100k with repetitions.Supplemental results: 45500.
My website 9500 and 3500 supplemental.

Do you think that is worth of making daily or weekly stats of indexed pages vs supplemental results?
Or don't worry too much about it ?
