Default Check how many terms site is searched for, Google Analytics?

In another thread Brian Mark mentioned that they are ranked for around 5,000 regular terms and Kgun mentioned they are ranked for about 700 terms.

What is the best way to check how many terms you are ranked for? Is it by using Analytics such as google analytics?

If it is by using google analytics please can people give me feed back on their experiences with analytics as Ive been advsied that the Java script used slows down the page which could affect SEO. Is this true?

Also I have also been a bit worried that using google analytics could have a negative effect as I believe google will be watching (spying) to find out where and what for people enter and leave our site.

Lets say someone searched and found us for the term "Fashion Jewelry" and then they left on our home page, Im worried google would use this information to say this page is not valuable for their rankings and therefore devalue us for that term.

Can they do this, and do they do this?

cheers

I do not think that 'all' the keywords you rank well for is important at all. Only the keywords that people search for (keywords with search volume) and ultimately conversions from that keyword that are what is important.

You can find out the search queries from search engine referrals from log file analysis (analytics).

Yes I also came to learn about this and am really disappointed. Overall this makes a bad reputation and we are never going to climb up the page rankings ever. By the way I have made a small jewelery auction site and am expecting it to get good rankings.

Not sure there is really an easy way to confirm all the keyword phrases you rank for since this would probably fluctuate all the time for most sites and would be virtually impossible to accomplish without direct access to SE ranking data. As some have suggested, what matters are the keyword phrases for which you are actually getting traffic. Assuming you have statistical tracking of referring URLs for your website, just check those log files to see what traffic is coming from the SEs and for what keyword phrases.

One thing I like about reviewing this type of data is that the SEs will place a site for keyword combinations you never thought of. I always get a kick out of seeing a click through for some strange keyword combo that I never considered possible.
