Default interlinking site

Is it a problem, I own a several different site for different areas in Fort worth Dallas area. Are the search engine going to hit me hard if i have in the footer a bar with the links to my other sites. Also they are on different ips. Right now it doesnt seem to be hurting me they all rank well in msn and yahoo but are brand new .

I believe that MSN and Yahoo frown on excessive cross linking.
A long time ago I tried adding a page on each site and posting lots of links from each of my sites, all related, keywords, blah, blah. My PR went in the toilet for MSN and Yahoo. I removed and retooled and PR came back up. Was it the retooling, or removing the excessive cross linking. I dont know, and for that matter what is excessive? If you have 9 websites all dealing with the same material, is posting the index page from each site on each front page of all your sites excessive? I dont know?
And what's up with the Dixie Chicks winnning at the Grammies? Many Many questions.

Sitewide links are generally ineffective at best..

You might be better served to build a nice short page for each location and place a single targetted link on that page pointing out the greatness of the other site..

Your "PR went in the toilet for MSN and Yahoo"?
Please supply a link to MSN's & Yahoo!'s PR tool. I would love to see it.

Would that not be considered excessive crosslinking?

I am not a big fan of linking websites that sell the same thing at all, but simple creating one page on the website and linking to another is not what I would consider a bad experience for the end user as long as the link is relevant. Now with that being said even using the above concept and doing tens or hundreds of times is a very bad experience. As with most thing, moderation is the key.

Still I don’t see any purpose of owning two websites that do the same thing so I would not link those to together or even have to website to begin with that sell the same thing.

You know what I mean?

What is you own a blog website and just simply post "Hey world check out my new website!". The SE's surely will not penalize you for this.

The best reason to have multiple websites for the same company is to have a "content site" that gets high rankings for content searches and then have a second site that sells stuff.

A great example is sites like: www.batteryuniversity.com

Which is basically just a content site that makes the readers feel like Cadex is an intelligent and informative company that wont screw you over by selling you a product that wont fit your needs because they understand the market...

So basically I agree with incrediblehelp. DO NOT have two sites that sell the same thing. Have one site that does the selling and have your other sites have content that bring ppl to your site that sells...

Recently I have seen one of my competitor, he has around 39 sites. and he has linked all the 38 sites and giving links to the last 39 site..

And there is an amazing result.. they have entered the royal pool of top 5....

Is this idea good as a long term ?

I would try not to crosslink at all unless like Matt Kelly said build content sites and link them back to the site that is doing the selling.
