Default Multiple domain names pointing to the same site.

For SEO reasons, is it worth having mutiple domain names, 301 redirected to the same site.

I have a client that has a bunch of domain names that have good keywords in them. They would like to point them to the same site. They currently use all these domains for email addresses that fit a particular topic related to the subject of the site.

My thought is to point all of these to the same website and do SEO based on the keywords of each domain name.

Example
For an Oakland A's baseball site.
I would have a domain name related to Oakland, baseball, maybe pitchers name, maybe a sponsors name etc.

All of these would be promoted for the keywords that relate to the domain name.

Would this really be of benefit?

It depends if there are links pointing to those domains or not. If so, there will be some SEO benefit. If not, there will be no SEO benefit. There may be some benefit from type in traffic ect.

You would make better use of your time to create sections on your main site and promote each section with the appropriate keywords. If they already own the secondary domains, 301 them and work on promoting your main site.

They already have the domains, they use them for different email addresses. However they are no links to them.

We already have the sections built and are promoting them through the main directory.

I'm thinking that other than for email purposes the other domain name are probably not of much value.

Thanks For the input
