Importance of meta description tag

No. It is not important for ranking. They haven't been for a long time. Add one to your site and watch nothing happen.

But you still want to use one. Google and MSN use it to display the description of a web page in the SERPs. This is a great chance for you to control want searches see when your pages come up in the SERPs.

It depends on the industry and thus competitiveness.

Description tag is important and I would always try to optimize it. In less competitive markets it can significantly effect the rankings and in more competitive markets description tag is only good for the description Google displays.

In both cases I would treat a description tag as an important on-site factor.

Keyword metatag on the other hand is a .... well you know.

I would say meta description tags are important, not as much as they used to, but they are still important, it certainly helps in the serp’s rankings.

- First it can be used for SE as a text to be displayed in the serp’s, which can help increase the number of clicks if done correctly.
- It helps that the pages in your site don’t get penalized for duplicate content, as if you had the same description for every page on your site.
