Default What do these metatags mean? Some are Dublin Core (DC.)

Can anyone please tell me the significance of these tags? Do they help you, or hurt you? I tried to find info on them and could not find anything. I did find one M$ page that mentioned the first tag and it may have to be removed in order to print all links on a webpage in a different language, but it did not say the significance or benefit of using the tag.

<meta name="MS.LOCALE" CONTENT="EN-US">

<meta name="CATEGORY" CONTENT="home page">

<meta name="URL" CONTENT="http://www.YourDomain.com">

<meta name="VW96.objecttype" CONTENT="looked like, keywords here">

<meta name="DC.Subject" CONTENT="also looked like, keywords here">

<meta name="DC.Title" CONTENT="also looked like, keywords here">
(Is that one the same as the typical title tag? If so, which version is better?)

<meta name="DC.Description" CONTENT="also looks like, keywords here">
(Is this the same as the typical description tag? If so, which version is better?)

<meta name="DC.Coverage.PlaceName" CONTENT="Global">
(Location? If so, any benefit to using it?)

I'm just curious if using any of these tags can help anything. I did later find out the DC.** tags are "Dublin Core", but I still can't find out if they are GOOD to use, or BAD to use for my webpages, if they are better or worse than the conventional meta tags, or the same. I couldn't find anything on the first 4 tags (other than what I mentioned about the first one).
Thank you.

The Dublin Core META Tags did not appear to be supported by the major public search engines Google, Yahoo and MSN until 2004-01-01.

But if something changed since then, I still do not see any good reason of using them, if it comes to SEO.

They might be useful for Intranets for organizing documents, etc though.

Therefore, I do not recommend using them.

In general I recommend to keep the head of your documents so short as possible as search engines are mainly interested in your visible content.

Using a title tag, description and keywords meta tags would serve all you needs for SEO.

You can make your own meta tags, as many as you want.

Example of tags that I made on my own site:

<META NAME="organizationnumber" CONTENT="NO:987091398">
<META NAME="zipcode" CONTENT="NO:1519">
<META NAME="technology" CONTENT="This site is made by Macromedia Dreamweaver MX 2004">

That was more than a year ago. The idea behind the last tag, was an idea I shared with an employer from Microsoft. My question:

Is there a method to find sites generated by Macromedia Dreamwaever without having that in the text on the site? I proposed the above solution. He said that the SE may index the tag.

Kjell,

what sense do those tags make for Search Engines or the end user?

If I wanted to use that crap, I would rather would use XMDP.

An explanation that you can make the tag you want. In other words, there is an ifinite number of potential tags.

The tags above are used on my old sites. On the sites I build today, I only use the title tag.

Example:
Site: Ad-University

<title>Web marketing and web visibility are moving targets. Use Ad-University.com to stay informed.</title>

The site is far from finished.

Kjell what do you want to say with that? That using description and keywords tags makes no sense?

Thanks for the info. "But if something changed since then..", I guess that's the question; did anything change since then. If the major SE's are now "supporting" them as of 2004, just how do they support them is what I'm trying to figure out. I wonder if there's any advantage SE wise to using these INSTEAD OF the conventional tags.

I know that, but what I'm asking is how do these tags, help you or hurt you in the SERP's. The only tags for which I have use is ones that can help with the SE's and the SERP's. ;)

To be honest, I do not see any advantage SE wise to using these INSTEAD OF the conventional ones.

And SE like smaller headers. They prefer to get to the content as soon as possible.
