It helps the search engines determine what your site is about. We try and keep our link text quite short and specific to the page we are linking to. So for example if anyone wants to link to us we would ask them to link to this page

http://www.bodyjewelryshopping.com/b...-wholesale.htm

Link Text : Body Jewelry or Wholesale Body Jewelry

By doing this i would like to think that we are helping the search engines determine that this url is important for this search term.

If our link text was : Costume jewellery & fashion jewelry
then it wouldnt be very specific to that page and therefore less likely to rank well if these words are not relevant to that page

The keywords should be contained in the anchor text

anchor text

Search engine algorithms use this anchor text to determine relevancy.

Try to have keywords as links instead of just your website address as a link.

You must mix your inbond links. Don't solely focus on images to home page. Spread yourself across descriptive text links to several internal pages.

Hi Tushar,

Search engines will give more weightage to the text in Anchor text. This will increase the sites SERP's for that particular keyword.

This is the reason why keywords will be used as title in link building.

Amar

A great example of this is doing a google search on "failure". Notice the top result is George W Bush's bio on the whitehouse.gov site. Nowhere on the page does the word failure appear. This happens because so many people have linked to this page using the anchor text "failure". So, this shows that using targeted keywords in your links is important to the search engines in determining page relevancy.

The reason that it's important to build a keyword list is because it gives you an idea of how many keywords you can use to bring traffic to your site.

If you have a list of 5,000 good keywords for your site, then you're able to bring more traffic to your site then if your only trying to rank your site for one keyword.

Janeth, I have a small doubt. From your reply I understood that we need to optimize more number of keywords for a site to bring more traffic.

You mentioned the number as 5000. Is it suggested to optimize a site for 5000 keywords?

The more keywords you optimize a site for the more traffic you can get. This means building more pages.

Unless you have 2500 pages, I don’t see how it would be possible to effectively optimize for 5000 keywords.

Let me give you some tips that I've learned over the past few years with link building:

First, use the Google Toolbar. I know the PR values shown in the bar aren't accurate but it does give you a good indication of the quality of the page.

Second, try and find sites and/or pages with content relevant to your site. When engines like google look at links, they also look at what the page is about where they found the link. If the link is related to the topic of the page then the link is worth more.

For example, if you have a gifts website then try and get links from related sites. A link from a software site will do you little good even if it has a high PR.

text links - use them. However, try and mix it up - don't use the same phrase for all your links, and don't use the same URL. For example, link out to deep pages on your site using different phrases. Don't just use "gifts" and link to the homepage.

Remember (and this is going to sound funny) but you need to artificially inflate your link count by making your inbound link growth look natural. That means you need to ensure consistency in the volume of links you request on a monthly basis. Don't get 300 links in one month and only 4 the next month. Doing this will get your site noticed (in the not so good way) by the engines.

Finally, always watch what the pros are doing. I like to go to sites like this link building blog and the link building wiki as they are always being updated with fresh link building info. There are others out there as well just check around.
