.htaccess a lot simpler

Why go through all the rigmarole of redirects and renaming ? I think the .htaccess method proposed by some is by far the simpler and most flexible. All you have to do is change ONE file and keep the rest as you want. Ans as someone said above, if your web host doesn't even let you create a .htaccess why are you still with them ?

My personal view anyway.
