Default 301 redirect

I have done a permanent 301 redirect on a site say about 6 months ago. I still don't like the way the site looks. So I want to do a redesign and will be moving the site to another host.
My question is how long do I need to show the redirect?
The page has been down for 6 months and redirected to the new page witch may or may not end up in the new site.
So when I redirect URL2 to whatever the new page will be. Would it be safe to drop URL1 and not get blasted in the SE's for not having a redirect on URL1?
Hope this make since and is in the right forum.

As long as there's links going to that old URL and as long as there's traffic going to it I would keep the 301 Permanent Redirect in place.

Default Forever is long enough

I have a few pages that haven't "been there" for over 4 years and I still get occasional traffic from those old pages that has been directed to my new replacement pages. In this length of time I have changed hosting companies 3 times.

Keep the 301's forever. It doesn't cost you anything to keep them. It can cost to drop them.

Default Just remove them

After you move, just use the Google remove url tool if you want stuff taken out.

Faster than waiting and wondering I'd say.

If you done a redirect for same url or domain than no need to 301 redirected because if you do that google treat as redirected page and show as supplemental result so, better thing is that do with 404 error page and remove from google automatic web site removal tool it’s work and it’s take hardly 7 day for removing for you older page and take new page very quickly.

To maintain the 301 redirect, you need to keep the URL with the redirect hosted. If you keep the same domain name for the new site on the new host, there is no need to do anything with the 301 redirect.

My concern from what you have said is the new site has been down. Does that mean the 301 redirect is pointing to a 404 error? If so, you may have issues with the SEs. Google seems to be fond of placing 404 error pages in their SERPs, lately. So, maybe not.

Does the original URL still have a lot of traffic? If so, why? You should find why the traffic is coming to the old URL and correct it so that the traffic comes to the new URL without the redirect. For instance, update your new URL with any linking partners.

I think this is what you have

original url A
301's to url B

and you're going to be

changing url B to url C

I would update the 301 for url A to point directly to url C as well as add a NEW 301 for url B to point to url C.

Anyone conquer or disagree?

Don't take them down till you have ZERO requests for url A / B and there are NO listings or links to those urls ANYWHERE (that you can find of course lol).

Hope that helps a touch.

He didn't say he was changing URLs again. He said he was changing hosts. Once he does, the DNS will update and the original 301 redirect(s) will still work.

Yes, If he change the host then 301 is excellent solution for them. Read Goolge guide line: http://www.google.com/support/webmas...437&topic=8524
